Having beaten Lanson & showed up well against an Albion side bristling with first team players such as Nat Saumi and Jon Fabian, the Pirates Academy boys took on & tamed the Tigers Academy under newly updated lights at the Mennaye Penzance.

Friday 13/10/06 - Pirates Academy 14 - 10 Leicester Tigers Academy

Having beaten Lanson & showed up well against an Albion side bristling with firs team players such as Nat Saumi and Jon Fabian, the Pirates Academy boys took on & tamed the Tigers Academy under newly updated lights at the Mennaye Penzance. The Tigers had hoped to keep their unbeaten record intact

Culpin is joined in an attacking looking back-line by the impressive Rickie Aley and Jack Cobden. England National Academy fly half Ben Youngs starts at no.10, with Sam Harrison coming in at scrum half.

Up front, Andy Brown gets his second Tigers start at prop, along with Adam Parkins who has recovered from injury to take his place on the opposite side of the scrum. Tom Collett gets the nod at hooker, with Greg Sammons moving to the bench. Mauricio Keiserie moves to the blindside flank from the second row, with Ben Avent and Adam Varley selected at number seven and eight respectively.

 

The Futures Bright - The Futures Pirates

Leicester with Neil Back in charge - four times England captain with 66 caps & part of the 2003 World Cup Winning side - obviously meant business, and so it turned out, but not to Neil Back's script.

The Pirates also had a top man in charge - Robin Cowling ex Leicester and England - with Ricky Pellow to assist & the boys did not disappoint.

Kicking off towards Newlyn, the Pirates had the Tigers under the cosh for much of the first half. Fly Half Mike Provis kept them penned in their own half with his reliable boot. Following Adam Nicholls & Karl Martin's good work, winger Johnny Morris nearly scored to the left of the posts. The crowd sensed a try coming & soon Martin sent Provis in for a try by the Newlyn Gate, which he duly converted from a position, where once we would have groaned, but now have become accustomed to kicking prowess.

This score goaded the Tigers back into action, & centre Will Lawson found his angle to sprint to the posts for an easy conversion by Full-back Rickie Aley, which he soon added to with an easy penalty in front of the posts. The Cornish pack though, were looking strong & confident, & soon pushed their way over for another try on the right, with flanker Duke Seymour getting the credit. Another smooth conversion from out wide sailed perfectly between the uprights, confirming Mike Provis as a real future prospect, as he has with his superb form whilst on loan to Camborne.

It was 14 - 10 at the break, and the crowd were happy, not least the Gnomes, who were out in force.

The Pirates had looked little lads in comparison to their larger opponents - many of whom had surprisingly thick beards for under 19s - but they showed superior technique in their ruck & mall game, whilst their defence mirrored that of their senior counterparts.

Neil Back could be heard pleading for his boys to 'Play it in their half', but it was to no avail, when the Tigers did make chances their handling was surprisingly poor which enabled the Pirates to sweep up and clear their lines. The tigers kept trying, but there was no way through, whilst the Pirates came very close a couple of times in the tea hut corner. The Pirates were deserved winners of a very entertaining game, if you missed this one, don't miss the next one against Bath on the 23rd October kick off 6.30pm

Those who have been making negative comments about Robin Cowling on TASC should have been at the match, the good work in developing Cornish talent was clear for all to see.
