8 Games In

A couple of weeks back we were pinching ourselves and enjoying the experience of sitting top of the table, now two weeks on and although having lost the last two games we still occupy a healthy 3rd place.

Quoting an extract from Old Prop Steve in the 6 Games Thread:

“I keep asking myself 'Just how good is this Pirates team?'. 

I guess many of us our pinching ourselves for the fact that we find ourselves leading the table on merit after six matches and NO team gains 27 points out of a possible 30 just by some sort of a fluke! 

Is this in fact a very good team which has a tendency to go off the boil for a while or just an average team which has had a run of purple patches? 

Hopefully the first applies and those flat periods can be minimised by the coaches and on-pitch leaders in which case we could just chuck a whopping great spanner into the works of the received wisdom of the RFU and the media. Now wouldn't that feel great! “

So on Saturday we head off to the Madjeski for what could be an epic battle with London Irish.

As Eastanglianpirate said:

“London Irish in Reading should be 'mega' - a real clash of the Titans - Provided we don't get disheartened by them going a couple of tries up , we can hold them up front , our defence can be superb and sting them with our back play. It's definitely possible!! “

Whichever way it pans out, one thing we know is that the boys will give it 100% from start to finish and hopefully enough of us will be there to AAARGH them on

It's a very tough task we face, but as Eastanglianpirate says, the. boys will give it 100% and that's all we can ask. If we can cut down the errors (which cost us dear against Bedford) and get a bit of luck, anything is possible.

Saw the last game between these two (the St Patric's Day clash), which set a championship attendance record - over 11,000 people. The Pirates didn't turn up until half time, after which they had at least 75% of the possession and were camped in the Irish 22. If they start well from the first whistle we have to be in with a chance.

We were there, too, Salty Dog. Pirates were like rabbits in the headlights for the first 20 minutes and conceded 4 tries very quickly. I thought it was going to be a cricket score, but we steadied the ship and competed well after that - and, as you say, we dominated most of the second half. No pressure on us, so the boys can give at lash and see what happens.

I hope there is pressure on or the team will not be doing their job. If we want to aspire to a top three team the n we need to turn up to these games thinking we can come away with something.

In all likely hood we will be 5th by close of play this weekend

I meant that LI will be expected to win the league easily and they have pressure to win every game.
We are in a much better place than the same time last season, and we finished 4th, within a whisker of third.
