Danny's off to Alkmaar

Burnley’s Danny Karbassiyoon is set to join AZ Alkmaar on trial with a view to a permanent transfer.

Despite being handed the number 3 shirt at the beginning of last season and looking likely to feature as our left back, Karbassiyoon was injured pre-season and featured only six times as a substitute in the whole of the 2005/06 season.

He was brought in on a two-year contract after his contract at Arsenal expired, but struggled with both injury and also it would seem to make an impression on Steve Cotterill.

Graham Branch filled the left-back void early on, deputising for Karbassiyoon as he recovered from injury before Jon Harley was brought in in September.

Harley made the left back position his own, playing in all but one of the games last season after signing, whilst Karbassiyoon could not stake a first team place.

Speaking of the news, Steve Cotterill revealed:

“Danny is flying out to have a trial with AZ on Wednesday.”

“I think they want some younger players to back up their first team squad and put another team underneath and I think that Danny Karbassiyoon comes into that category and the price bracket.”

"We will obviously know a little bit more early next week after Danny's trial, which lasts until Sunday."

AZ Alkmaar finished second in the Dutch Eredivisie (Premier League) last season, qualifying for the UEFA Cup behind champions PSV Eindhoven. Should Danny join Alkmaar he will join up former Glasgow Rangers’ Georgian striker Shota Arveladze.
