Burnley have announced today that Latvian striker Gatis Kalnins is being given a trial just as we are about to take on Partick Thistle tonight in the clubs second game of this mini-tour of Scotland. Kalnins, who is a full Latvian International ply's his trade with Skonto Riga, standing 6 ft 3 ins tall, he has scored almost a goal every two games in his native Latvia ( 61 goals in136 games).
Latvia is a country smaller than Scotland, and it has a total population of 2.4 million, they have produced some players who have already graced the Premiership, Marian Pahars, Igor Stepanovs and former Fulham player Andrejs Stolcers .
I have no idea if Gatis can get used to meat pie and chips in East Lancashire, after the normal Latvian diet of Rupjmaize and desert of Klingeris, to those that haven’t been on Manhugs exotic food sampling, its dry rye bread and a almond and raisin filled pretzel.
Possibly the most famous Latvian, would be Charles Bronson who was the son of Latvian immigrants, but with Pahars and Igor leading the way Gatis might just reach the heights, all in all its up to him. Owen has given him the chance, it's up to him to prove he is worth a shot!
