It's Chelsea

The Clarets have today been drawn with Chelsea in the last 16 of the League Cup. The tie will be played at Stamford Bridge in the week commencing 10th November 2008. There will be many that will be disappointed at drawing such a strong side at this stage of the competition, but there will equally be many that will be dribbling at the mouth at the prospect of facing such highly esteemed opposition.

Scolari_270908_a

Big Phil and his merry men will probably be expecting this to be quite an easy task for them to progress to the last eight of this competition, but hopefully our Claret heroes will give them a game to remember, our form against Premiership opposition in Cup ties over recent years has been overall pretty good, and it looks as though with our improved recent form it will be game on.

The last time Burnley played at Stamford Bridge was in a League Division 2 game on Saturday December 4th 1982 in front of a crowd of just 8,184, the game finished 2-1 to Chelsea with Brian Laws scoring the Burnley goal.

Since those dark days of the 2nd Division Chelsea as we all know have progressed to the summit of English football, winning league titles and cups on the way, Burnley on the other hand have seen the lows of the 4th division and slowly improved their standing to the 2nd tier.

This game will be a mouth watering experience for all Clarets fans worldwide, and one that many will want to say those immortal lines " I was there" Lets hope we can accredit ourselves with playing good football, and that we can travel to London in our thousands to cheer on the lads.

John Terry, Deco, Lampard, Ballack, Cole and others, You'd better watch out The Clarets are coming to get you.

Wonder if Chelski will take us very seriously & field their strongest squad.

A place in the q/finals may be a step too far for us, but as long as we don't get mullered, i'd be fairly happy.

How much wonga will we get from this game?

I remember trying to get ont'turf (my 1st time) v Chelsea, for that FA cup replay (1970?) but, along with hoardes of others without tickets, was turned away.

Whatever side they put out, it's bound to be full of internationals.
Other than drawing Arsenal, this tie couldn't have been any tougher IMO. I just hope we give a good account of ourselves and dont get whalloped.

What makes people so confident we'll get 6,000 tickets? Great if true.

Also, will it definitely be on the Tuesday? I was kinda hoping it'd be played on the Wednesday.

Good write up by the way, whoever did it.

Chelsea tend to play their games on a Wednesday during midweek fixtures.

If the Arsenal game is on tele(which is likely) then the game may be moved to accommodate that fixture.

Thanks bud. (Sm151)

Chelsea play in the Prem at bstdville on Sunday the 9th Nov so I can't see this game being played on the Tuesday, more likely to be the Wednesday.
Even if we do get 6,000 tickets don't think there is any way we will sell out, especially midweek in London

One of the Chelsea fans reckons that they will field a tough squad, similar to their game against Pompey, mid week.

I know it's a cup game, but I really can't see us getting owt from this game.

you are right TC.....next door neighbour down here a chelski fan and he reckons they are in it to win it, and so likely to field a tough squad, they wont take opposition lightly, especially after the cardiff fiasco ..(his words!)

Would love to get tickets for this one seeing as it is just down the road for me!

COME ON YOU CLARETS!

I don't think they can do anything else. One of the journos on the Sunday Supplement this morning said their squad was that strong they could field two teams in the Champions League and I don't think he's wrong.

None of these ten started against Stoke yesterday :-

Cudicini
Ferreira
Carvalho
Bridge
Ivanovic
Deco
Hilario
Joe Cole
Belletti
Anelka

Enough quality there to give us a game I think.
