Manchester United's young 20 year old defender decided to turn down an offer made by Alex Ferguson and today instead signed a 4 year deal for Burnley. Richard becomes Owen Coyle's 5th signing of the close season.
Born in Salford, Richard has been part of the United set up since the age of 9. During his early career he was dogged by injury, but he came of age when breaking into the reserve side during the 2007/08 season. He is prominently a right back but can also deputise in the left back position. On the subject of his move to Turf Moor, he today explained that, "I've been there since I was nine. it was difficult to leave, but I'm ready for this challenge. "The credit must go to the coaches at Manchester United because they've made me into the player I am now; an old fashioned full-back who is tenacious, can stop crosses, and is quick." Singling out specific coaches for praise, he said, "Paul McGuiness, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, and obviously Sir Alex have all influenced my game." During his time at United Richard played in the League twice for United, with two further cup appearances. The Longside welcomes Richard Eckersley to Turf Moor. |
