It says a fair bit about how far Burnley have come that we were so disappointed at the end. This time last year, as a mid-table Championship side, the idea of a Premier League home draw against Aston Villa would have seemed fanciful. But it happened, and it led to thousands of proud, yet deflated, fans trudging home in the pouring rain.
It was the rain, every bit as much as our terrific home record, that convinced me we would win. We play well in the rain and the fans sing well in the rain, the wetter the better. This rain was even wetter, the wind even wilder than the wind and the rain we enjoyed beating Arsenal in last year in the Carling Cup. The rain then was horizontal as well as vertical.
