Just as referees have assessors in the stands, sitting in judgement, so should the fans. And where the assessors deem that one set of fans has performed substantially better than the other, then they should be able to award bonus points to the team that inspired the support.

Ah, you protest, but this would introduce purely subjective assessments into a game decided upon empirical evidence, namely which team scores the higher number of goals. But plenty of game-changing referees' decisions are made on totally subjective grounds, so what's the difference? Take the first of West Ham's two penalties today. Standing in row H seat 55 of the away end, I was nearer to the incident than either referee Chris Foy or his linesman. And I could see quite clearly that it was not a penalty. Aye FC, but he's good at that though is Alastair, in fact he's made a living out of it.
