In a bizarre sort of way, getting relegated via a 4-0 hammering was less hurtful than a late, scrambled single-goal defeat might have been. We had not expected much as the day began. And looking at the final scoreline, not much is very much what we got. So we're down.
Our season in the Premier League is all but over and a return to the Championship beckons after we have played Birmingham and Spurs and the players have had a holiday, doubtless some of them via Bolton. I will now do my usual "and yet if only" insert ... And yet we were easily as good as Liverpool in the first half, had the best two chances and if only Jack Cork had put a free header a couple of feet to the right just before half-time, we would have gone into the interval one up.
