Alastair Campbell Summarises The Birmingham City Game

You may remember that when Blackburn beat Burnley at Turf Moor a few weeks ago, their jubilant fans celebrated with a chant that went on and on and on until it filled my head for the long journey home. "We're having a party when Burnley go down ... We're having a party when Burnley go down." Repeat ad infinitum and, for Burnley fans, ad nauseam.

Courtesy of our 4-0 defeat at home to Liverpool last week, we were already down before Saturday's game at Birmingham, where we were hoping to add to the four paltry points picked up on our travels this year.

But I am glad to report that the good mood which has characterised away support all season, with just the occasional lapse, was on display.

To the same tune as that Blackburn jibe, they sang long and loud "We're going down but we're having a laugh, we're going down but we're having a laugh."

A lot of the laughter was inspired by the improbable idea that in addition to setting a new record as the team suffering the most away defeats in Premier League history (17), another record was on the cards. There was a chance that we would become the first relegated club to qualify for Europe.

I think AC is a masochist for watching a Burnley side managed by Brian Laws.
