Burnley 1 Blackburn Rovers 1
By Burnley FC
September 14 2013
Lady luck again deserted Burnley against as 10-man Blackburn snatched a fortuitous draw in an absorbing Turf Moor derby.
The Clarets thought they had finally got one over on Rovers after second half substitute Junior Stanislas struck a magnificent opener 15 minutes from time. But with the clock running down and the Clarets in control, an attempted clearance from Michael Duff - as he attempted to recover the situation following a poor Scott Arfield back pass - deflected off the ever-alert Jordan Rhodes to give Rovers a get-out-of-jail free card. And in stark contrast to the feeling around Turf Moor 12 months ago, when Sam Vokes rescued a point with a late equaliser, the reversal of fortunes left the Clarets crestfallen after coming so close to victory. On-loan Stoke winger Michael Kightly was handed a baptism of fire on his full debut, replacing Keith Treacy in the only change to the starting line-up to the one that won at Derby County two weeks ago. also FC we just need a bit of vision and the quick first ball when someone has made space for themselves on the flanks.Cannot fault the effort. It will be interesting if SD uses any subs. If it stays 0-0 I think he'll keep the same 11 on why isnt noble on the bench? 59% possession!

Well in control after the goal, just can't fathom why a professional would do something as naive as pass the ball, blindly, into that area.
They enjoyed the luck afterwards, too, but the ball should never have been there in the first place.
Gutted doesn't cover it.

It was Arfield at fault with an appalling back pass. Duff kicked onto the @#$%&'s leg it was an unlucky rebound. Second half a lot scrappier. For what its worth:
Heaton 8 - needs to be a bit slower throwing out and putting defenders under pressure didn't catch one corner
Trippier 8
Duff 7
Shackell 8
Mee 9 snuffed out all threats on the left
Arfield 6
Marney 7
Jones 8
Kightly 8 very fair start
Vokes 8
Ings 8
Junior 9!
First half they looked the part. Definitely 2 points dropped and we could have gone top!!

Looking at it again, the pass to Arfield did put him under pressure unnecessarily but what happened afterwards was bizarre.

Should have won yet again but they get all the luck.
Shocking pass back and then Shackell goes to ground and Duff for some reason decides to boot it with his left foot against Rhodes.
Feels like a defeat.

I wish I could run that fast and that far, but sadly those days are gone.
Fouty, despite the abuse I (deservedly) heap upon your head occasionally, I do credit you with some intelligence. However no intelligent person could possibly claim that Arfield in no way, shape or form, bore any responsibility for that goal..........unless of course they were trolling.

look at this way, if a rovers player had played the ball arfield did, he'd be credited with making a good through ball.
i'd still expect our defenders to defend it. it wasn't unplayable. duff panicked and made the situation much worse.
an interesting point of comparison - if they show it on MOTD - phil jagielka for everton today. torres shanks a shot, jags finds himself in his own 6 yard box with an awkward ball. he doesn't panic and welly it anywhere. he ushers it of play - in the 90th min against chelsea.
that's a cool head. something duff lacks.

Whether Duff could/should have dealt with it better is debatable. That it was entirely down to Duff and no one else is a ludicrous assertion, unless.....

They will be gutted by that result. I hope SD can get them in the right frame of mind to stuff Brum. Why was Noble not on the bench? Can Stanislas play as a pure forward is that the plan if Vokes/Ings are injured, in which case why bring in Noble?
Re: Burnley 1 Blackburn Rovers 1

Noble isn't good enough soapy at this stage of his career. He's been brought in on a short term contract so that we can have a look at him to judge whether he's got long term potential or not. That's what I thought Dyche said about him anyway.
As far as I understand it we're still looking for the Vokes/Ings replacement we can afford, without much success.

did say in original comment that he made worst of a bad situation. they were certainly put on back foot by the pass, but situation very defendable.
now, this you can do nothing about...

Yes I agree fouty, it was certainly defendable, and the first of our defenders to try to retrieve the situation was Shackell, but he got completely skinned. At least Duff got a foot on the ball and was just unlucky. He wasn't responsible for Rhodes being in a goal scoring position and he made a better attempt to defend it than Shackell. Not all his fault by any means.
