Burnley climbed proudly to the top of the Championship as a Sam Vokes double saw off a spirited Doncaster side.Vokes’ clinical spot kick on the stroke of half time proved the perfectly timed catalyst for a seventh win in eight games.
And following a second half spell of pressure from the hosts, the Welshman turned home Kieran Trippier’s late cross to chalk up a second successive double and take his tally to the season to eight. The Ings/Vokes partnership has now registered 18 goals to spark a remarkable rise to the summit by Sean Dyche’s side. And a fourth away win of the campaign gave clear evidence that the classy Clarets’ season shows no sign of slowing. Burnley made one change at the Keepmoat Stadium, with David Edgar replacing the suspended Dean Marney. But it was the hosts, boosted by the recent loan signing of Manchester United striker Federico Macheda, who made a lively start. And the Italian forced Heaton to make an early save as he controlled a James Coppinger cross and went for the near post from a tightening angle. Where to begin? Well I'm a Burnley fan not a Barcelona fan so I make it close to 50% of the safety target with 80% of the games still to go.
I guess we are all asking how long can it last, we are all probably worrying about the paper thin squad. Then I look at the goal difference. 6 goals conceded, only QPR have conceded less - indeed only Watford have scored more.
I always say you look after 10 games, then 20 etc. We've earned our position and though we will struggle to stay there anything is possible. We certainly won't be easy to beat, you have to score to beat a team and we've proved pretty effective at stopping teams doing that.
