Burnley 0 West Ham United 2
By Burnley FC
October 29 2013
Burnley bowed out of the Capital One Cup in controversy as Matt Taylor’s late penalty handed West Ham a quarter final place.
The tightest of games looked destined for extra time when Jason Shackell was ruled to have bundled over Kevin Nolan in the area, despite clearly winning the ball. And Taylor exacted the punishment with a clinical penalty to hand the Clarets their first defeat in two months. A stoppage time penalty from Jack Collison, as Burnley went for broke, also compounded the misery as Keith Treacy was dismissed for a professional foul on the West Ham substitute. Earlier Kieran Trippier had come closest to breaking the deadlock with a free kick that struck the Hammers crossbar. But it proved to be a frustrating night for Sean Dyche’s men, who can now put all their efforts into their league campaign. Burnley made four changes to the side that emphatically defeated QPR at Turf Moor four days earlier. Michael Kightly dropped to the bench in favour of former Hammers winger Junior Stanislas, while Kevin Long replaced Michael Duff at the heart of the defence. Burnley v West Ham Match Thread

Seems to be the thing these days so I'll start the match thread by posting a few comments off West Ham forums.
"Amend at will but I watched them on Saturday, and was pretty impressed. They never gave QPR any time on the ball whatsoever and forced them into mistake after mistake, really aggressive pressing. They mixed it up well, went long at times and showed they could play short and tidy stuff too when circumstances allowed but what impressed me the most was the momentum they played with which we will have to kill. They really got at QPR, the crowd, the players, the lot. The good news is that I don't think Dyche will put out anywhere near a full side."
"Burnley, on the other hand have different priorities and may decide to rest a few...... wishful thinking maybe, but who knows!!"
"I also watched Burnley Saturday. Very entertaining and two players up front who obviously work well with each other. I think they will put out a decent side for their fans so we need to match them. This is not like playing a struggling league 2 side."
"Sam in his post match interview yesterday eluded to playing squad players so expect him to field a weakened team. With no quality strikers I am not confident of winning games including this one."
"Gret win by Burnley at the weekend, I'm very pleased for their Manager who was disgracefully treated by Watford ."
"Someone mentioned the stupid music to the goals. Was totally unnecessary as seemed great atmosphere anyway against QPR. I think their manager will be having good career in the game imo. I will be made up if we win through tomorrow, it's not a given."
"set off for Burnley in the morning, where i hope we put a strong team out, as Burnley will tuck us up otherwise!"
"Burnley are known for putting up a fight against prem teams though and this will be no walkover"
"I can't remember the number of times we've lost games like this, to sides far worse than this Burnley outfit.
Absolutely no reason for me to be optimistic. 2-0 to Burnley."
Not a massive amount of confidence in the Hammers ranks and it's a measure of how far we've come that the PL club's fans are actually concerned about the strength of the team WE'll be putting out.

It's unbelievable isn't it? The sniffiness has gone, the 'you've had an easy start' comments have been proven unfounded, even the 'you'll be found out when injuries and suspensions hit' looks off the mark.
We're getting some really positive comments from even the unlikeliest of sources/supporters.
It'll be tough tonight, mind. Be interesting to see how we do against a Big Sam type of team but the squad seem well able to look after themselves and dish it out too. Really enjoyed seeing us launch into tackles in both our televised games.

That's not how you do it BC, you need a quote saying they'll beat us easily and have no idea who any of our players are and they came to Burnley and ended up with consumption last season.

The centre midfield worries me a little - I'm assuming Marney not over his knock

Manhug will be livid with all the midfield changes...i'm very pleased about it.
It's a shame we haven't the quality to change the all team

Playing some really good stuff, easily the better side. Big Sam will have to have some words of inspiration to turn this or there's only going to be one outcome here.
Good stuff.

You can't write a BFS team off from scoring from a set piece though.
Is this the same commentator, on the coolsport, as on Saturday. Pretty complimentary about burnley.
I like the half-time commentary, some blokes chatting about a house or something, a lovely corner for £120 grand.

Fair enough, we did alright.
First penalty didn't look like a penalty to me but my picture wasn't perfect. Second,
Treacy.
We go again on Saturday.

I know MH will shoot me for heresy but if the winning run had to end then I'd rather here than in the league to be honest.
Millwall will not be an easy fixture for us either, these are the times that will test the squads resolve - and the fans!

Ironic that Treacey gets a red card for putting a shift in during the last 2 mins.
i think 99% of fans would prefer the run to come to an end in the cup rather than the league. Dyche obviously agreed or he wouldnt have rested Duff and Kightly.

I think a midfield of Jones, Marney, Kightly and Arfield would have seen us through, the replacements did alright but we need more from them.
Look at Stock for example, very good in parts but for the most part was another of the flatter to deceive footballers we've seen so much of in recent times. Brilliant in parts, useless and injured/unfit in others.
Brian Stock = Alan Mahon = Alan Moore = Steve Thompson (the 1994 one, not the 2008 one)

I'm glad we're out of it to be honest, with no more damage that a 3 match ban for Treacy. As long as Arfield recovers we should be able to cope with that.
Fergie always said it's how you react to defeats that shows what you're made of. Hopefully we'll go on another unbeaten run now.

You could be right aggi, I always assumed all reds were 3 games but it seems not, and the rules vary in different leagues. Ah well, even at my age you live and learn.
Anyway no great damage done tonight then, and no doubt Keith will be glad of the rest after playing 90 minutes.

Played very well first half. fatty must have given Hammers a rocket at half time. Pleased overall with the performance (not the result though obviously). They will learn stuff from tonights game and is all still good in the Claret's camp.

I can't see why this will have any bearing on our league form, half our first team weren't playing. A good run out for the reserves though, keep them up to match fitness for when they're needed.

Only a 1 match ban for Treacy I suspect. It's violent conduct that gets a 3 match ban I think.
I can happily confirm you're right aggi, Treacy's suspension ends on Sunday.
