David Jones was a whisker away from grabbing the winner against his former club in a tense stalemate at Wigan.The former Latics’ midfielder rattled the crossbar in first half stoppage time as a game of precious few chances always looked like ending goalless.
At the other end, ex-Claret Chris McCann came close to his own goal-den moment, forcing a goal-line clearance from Kieran Trippier. But with Wigan unable to prevent a second successive goalless home draw in four days, Burnley could not take advantage to end their year on a high. The Clarets made one change from the defeat at Middlesbrough three days earlier, with Keith Treacy returning to the starting line-up for the first time since Watford and replacing Michael Kightly, who dropped to the bench. Danny Lafferty, meanwhile, continued at left-back in the absence of Ben Mee. But the first chance fell to former Burnley midfielder McCann, who met Stephen Crainey’s deep corner with a bullet header that Trippier hacked away at the near post. Tom Heaton then clawed away Leon Barnett’s angled effort after Jordi Gomez broke from midfield. Burnley were eager to get on the front foot too though - and in the 28th minute the reliable supply line or Trippier laid on a chance for Sam Vokes.
