Burnley 3 Huddersfield 2
By Burnley FC
January 1 2014
New Year, same old story as Danny Ings was back among the goals in the Clarets’ thrilling and heart-stopping victory over Huddersfield at Turf Moor.
The Clarets striker bagged a brace to take his tally to 19 for the season, either side of a Town strike for ex-Claret Martin Paterson. Ings slotted past Alex Smithies after only six minutes and then, after Paterson levelled with his third goal in as many games, the Clarets striker restored the lead before half time with a sublime finish. Kieran Trippier sealed a fabulous attacking display by the Clarets with the killer third 11 minutes from time. And after Paterson struck again in the 88th minute, Tommy Smith missed a sitter in a heart-stopping few minutes to confirm the Clarets’ ascent back into the top two spots. Burnley welcomed back Ben Mee following two games out with a thigh strain. The defender replaced Danny Lafferty in the only change to the starting line-up that drew 0-0 at Wigan three days earlier. And it took just six minutes for the Clarets to take the lead as Ings pounced. David Jones’ flighted ball down the left, over a high and square back line, released the top scorer and with the flag staying down, Ings advanced and slotted past Alex Smithies to get the New Year off the best possible start. Lovely approach play from Scott Arfield and Ings soon set-up Sam Vokes, whose first touch forced a hurried second with a volley that he skied into the ranks of Town fans behind the goal. And when Town’s back line failed to clear Trippier’s ball into Vokes on the edge of the box, Arfield was just off target as he looked to find the target against his former employers. But out of the blue, from their first attack, Town were level as Paterson struck. A left wing corner from Adam Hammill caught on the wind and from Murray Wallace’s knock-down, Paterson grabbed his third goal in as many games with a simple header from four yards. That rocked Burnley, but the response was immediate and as the half hour approached Jones came close to putting the hosts back ahead, Trippier did the donkey work and fed a square ball to Jones ,who spun on the edge of the box and forced Smithies into a terrific save to his right with a curling g effort. And Jones was even closer six minutes before the break as he struck the woodwork, curling a delightful free kick off the face of the crossbar after Ings was upended 25 yards from goal. Nice quick start out of the blocks and a couple of quick goals to take us to 4-1 within 10 mins of the restart should ease the nerves!

Apparently the performance was far more convincing than the scoreline. Be interesting to see if those who went agree.

I'd agree with that, this was much more a 4-1 game than 3-2.

It was much better from us today.
Ings should have scored about five, Jones hit the bar, Marney should have had another.
There was a bit of a wobble in the last five minutes, but we battered them for the other 85.

We could really be 'back' soon Jabber, our next 3 games are all against teams in the bottom 7.
But have we been away, only three teams have taken more points than us over the last 6 games.

A super game and a super performance... 4 or 5-1 would have been a better reflection... several times we cut through with a 4 on 3 or a 3 on 2 and muffed it with a poor final pass.
Ings looked fresh as a daisy. Vokes badly needs a goal. Jones superb. Trippier magnificent going forward.
Missed third goal cos was downstairs having a barny with a steward. A pimple faced 20-year old doing his first game and asked me to moderate my language. Twice he'd heard me using foul language he said.
So what words have I used I asked downstairs. 'Sh*t' he said... at the referee. And the two ladies with you as well.., they've said it...
How i didn't smack him I don't know. I can understand after this how easy it is to succumb to rage and lash out.
Anyway get me your supervisor I bawled at him. He disappeared and I waited. He and supervisor and FIVE other stewards returned.
Right you basta**S I thought, I'll smack the lot of you. Supervisor came upstairs and took one look at Mrs T and daughter. No one around us had heard the word used at all.
I apologise sir, he said. And removed the pimple-faced one.
Other than that... a great day.

Bit too much honest ale pre-match? You should have sung "tw@t in a jacket/You're just a tw@t in a jacket" at him.
Seriously- you give these plonkers a high-viz vest, and the tiniest bit of authority and they misuse it. It seems to bring out the latent bully in them- he probably sub-consciously thought you looked like an easy target. Little did he know whom or what he was dealing with.
You've got to ask though- don't they get any briefing or guidance on what is or isn't acceptable? These days "sh*t" is a fairly mild word. Yesterday, about six rows in front of us was a well-refreshed bloke who was getting very excited and launching torrents of swearing at the away end and occasionally getting up to 'gesticulate'. Everybody around seemed to think it was very funny (because it was) and not a steward went anywhere near him.
So I reckon you just met a tw@t in jacket, Dave.

Common sense, unfortunately, can't be taught in dealing with these situations. He'll have been told 'offensive language' isn't acceptable and gone launching in without engaging his brain taking into account all the facts.

absolutely a 4-1 rather than 3-2 game.
ings, trippier and shackell were all outstanding but jones gave an absolute masterclass, especially in the first half.
signing of the season and then some.

To be honest Dave the whole incident is bizarre, if anyone gets upset at the use of the word @#$%& on a football ground they really ought not be going. And why on earth the steward took him seriously, and didn't just tell to sit down and enjoy the game I've no idea.
Incidentally did you notice that Huddersfield had another referee in their pocket. It was almost as bad as the away game, all they had to do was fall down when any Burnley player came within 6 ft of them and they got a free-kick. How do they do it ?

Their first goal could have been avoided easily , we had at least two chances to clear the danger but opted to **** about with it needlessly in front of our own goal. Conceded a corner and got stupidly punished for it.
On the plus side, three wonderful goals set up by some breathtaking passing in my opinion. Also, we missed a hatful of chances . Could have easily finished up with five or more on another day.I thought they would lose this one, so great to watch. well done Clarets.
