Burnley 2 Derby County 0
By Burnley FC
March 1 2014
Burnley's midfield marvels struck in each half to see off in-form Derby and put the Clarets five points clear in second spot.
|
David Jones put Sean Dyche’s side on the way to an 11th unbeaten league game with a magnificent volleyed finish just before the half hour.
And after the Rams controversially had lone striker Chris Martin sent off for diving just before the break, Dean Marney secured all three points with a poacher’s strike at the three-quarter mark.
The victory, a fourth in five games, completed a whole calendar year unbeaten at Turf Moor for the Clarets.
But more importantly, it opened up clear daylight on the chasing pack ahead of the big East Lancashire derby at Blackburn.
Dyche had the opportunity to name an unchanged side for the seventh successive game.
And in a lively opening, there was nearly the perfect start as Danny Ings homed in on goal in the fifth minute, only to pull his shot wide of Lee Grant’s goal.
The Clarets continued on the front foot, with Scott Arfield and Ings almost combining to set-up the Scot.
Marney’s shot from Kieran Trippier’s reverse pass was then deflected over as the Clarets started where they left off against Derby’s East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest last week.

From BBC :
Smashing.
What a big game this is.
Should be a cracker.
Quote:Burnley could name the same starting line-up for the sixth straight game when Derby visit Turf Moor on Saturday.

They don't have a great record against the top teams, hope that carries on tomorrow. We'll be well up for it, well able to win, just depends how Derby are set-up. Play like we did that first-half against Forest and we'll be fine.
Bloody nervous, though.

I've never really thought automatic was on, just seemed too much to hope for. Win tomorrow though and I'll start to believe, we'll be 5 pnts clear of the 3rd team and if Forest and Derby can't do it, I can't see anyone stopping us.

This has been an incredible season, I too thought many times it would all come to an end for us. It hasn't.
Beating Derby will show we are more than likley to finish in automatic spot. Last week was so memorable, the team are doing remarkable things. 3-1 win and jubilation. UTC.

I was off to bed... always difficult against 10 men. SD will no doubt have a plan for the second half.

Were Derby as cynical as they sounded? Can't watch any of the streams, daughter on computer and iPad not playing ball with WiFi.

We just need to keep our heads and not give the ref any cause to even things up. Derby will try and get our players injured, booked and sent-off. Going to be a tough half this.

We deserve to be in the lead, only one team in it apart from that disallowed goal they were never at the races..we dont want to do anything stupid this half to give the ref a cause to give them anything and hopefully we can get another goal to se them off.

Derby have taken 31 points from their 16 away games in the Championship this season.
Is that right? That is an astounding return away from home.
As for us, well they amaze me more every week. I was driving home from Derbyshire when the match was on so was listening to the updates on Talksport.
What a result, what a position we have put ourselves in.
Automatic is on, let's do this!
