    But Newcastle United replied shortly after the break through Papiss Cissé in the first meeting between the two sides since March 1983. The draw was enough to lift Burnley outside the Premier League’s bottom three for the first time this campaign.
Scott Arfield returned to the starting line-up in Burnley’s only change to the side that drew with Aston Villa at the weekend.
Michael Kightly made way for the Scot while Michael Duff was still missing with a calf problem.
    Meanwhile, visiting manager Alan Pardew opted for an attacking formation with strikers Cissé and Ayoze Pérez both starting for Newcastle. It took the Clarets eight minutes to forge their first opening.
    After the ball was won back on the half-way line, Arfield released Danny Ings in behind and his eventual effort on the turn was punched away by Rob Elliot.
    Ings then saw his snapshot from outside the box miss the target before he slipped Ashley Barnes into the penalty area. The latter’s curling strike went just over the crossbar.
    In response, Sammy Ameobi had Newcastle’s first shot on goal, but Tom Heaton dealt with it comfortably in a first half that was coming to life after a quiet opening 20 minutes.
    On the half-hour mark, the visitors created another chance. Cissé combined well with Ayoze only for Heaton to come off his line quickly and smother the Spaniard’s shot on the stretch. But it was Burnley who took the lead moments later.
    Kieran Trippier’s long ball forward was knocked down by Ings straight into the path of Boyd who controlled the ball instantly and smashed it home from just outside the box beyond Elliot and into the net.
   Cissé and Ayoze soon linked up again, but it was this time Trippier’s turn to clear the danger.
And the Clarets could have doubled their advantage right on the stroke of half-time in what would have been a goal of the season contender.
   Arfield and Boyd were both involved before Ings’ delightful backheel saw David Jones break into the penalty area from deep only for his effort to miss the target by a whisker.
