Tottenham 4 Burnley 2

Goals rained down as Spurs fought back from two goals down to see off Burnley and earn a place in the FA Cup fourth round. The Clarets were in dreamland after scoring twice in the opening seven minutes through Marvin Sordell's first goal for the club and Ross Wallace's free kick.

But Tottenham hauled themselves back level at the break through Paulinho and Etienne Capoue.

And mirroring Burnley’s start, Spurs scored twice more themselves in the opening seven minutes of the second half to seal the tie through Vlad Chiriches and Danny Rose.

Sean Dyche made five changes to the side that defeated QPR at the weekend.

Michael Duff returned to skipper the side in the absence of rested Jason Shackell, and wide men Michael Kightly and Wallace both started in place of George Boyd and Dean Marney.

Up front, Sam Vokes made his first start since March and was joined in attack by Sordell.

And it was Pinner-born Sordell who ignited the tie just three minutes in, racing past a static Spurs’ defence from Kieran Trippier’s through ball and rifling a volley past a startled Michel Vorm to open his account for the club in style.

Incredibly, four minutes later, it was two!

Trippier was fouled 30 yards from goal and Wallace stepped up to drill a free kick into the corner of goal with the help of a wicked deflection.

Just 10 minutes into a pulsating tie, the explosive start continued as Paulinho halved the deficit, chesting down Soldado’s flick-on from Andros Townsend’s cross and firing home from close-range.

Eventually, and probably to the relief of both managers, the game settled as defences recovered their composure.

And it took until the half hour for Burnley to create their next opening of note, as Wallace advanced in a central position but lacked accuracy with his shot from distance.

However, Spurs ended the half level, despite a glaring miss from Paulinho in the 45th minute.

Scott Arfield was robbed by the Brazilian halfway in the hosts’ half and the break caught Burnley cold. But from Townsend’s low cross, Paulinho somehow struck the crossbar from point-blank range.

Moments later though, it mattered not as Ben Davies crossed and Capoue strode effortlessly onto the loose ball on the edge of the box to drill a fierce, low shot past helpless Heaton.

Frightening really, shows what will happen in the league if we have more than a couple of injuries. Just twice we've had to make major changes and both times we've got mullered. Keep them fingers crossed, we've got away with murder so far.

They also lost at Palace last Saturday Jabber, which doesn't bode well for this Saturday. And although they somehow won the game in the end, they got played off the park by Leicester on Boxing Day.

We HAVE to mate, no other result will do.

Still, in the last 18 months, when this team has had to deliver, they have done. No reason to doubt them....as long we've got the first team out, or near enough to it.

Yeah, I was supposed to be getting the ferry yesterday, which I imagine would have been cancelled anyway, but my father-in-law died suddenly last Friday so I obviously had more important things to do over here.

Best wishes Jabber and very sorry.

In the cold light of day that was a truly disappointing result after being 2-0 up. I always used to wonder what the hell pundits were on about when they said 'they scored too soon.'

Now I know.
