Ten-man Burnley fell to a narrow defeat against an in-form Everton side at Goodison Park. Kevin Mirallas scored the winner just short of the half-hour mark, before Ashley Barnes was sent off for a second bookable offence in stoppage time to the first half.

Earlier, Tom Heaton made a brilliant save to deny Ross Barkley from the penalty spot on 11 minutes. Despite being a man down, the Clarets always stayed in the game and could have found the net in a late search for an equaliser. Both teams made an energetic start to the match. In response, Sam Vokes headed Kieran Trippier’s left-foot cross into the box over the crossbar. On 10 minutes, Everton had a penalty. Aaron Lennon and James McCarthy combined to win the ball back in midfield and as the former sprinted towards the Burnley penalty area, the referee adjudged he was brought down by However, Heaton dived low to his right to keep out Barkley’s resulting spotkick for his second penalty save of the season. And the Burnley goalkeeper was busy again just five minutes later when he first clawed a dangerous ball in away from danger, before denying Leighton Baines on a well-struck volley. Everton kept the initiative and Lennon found space between the lines and again ran at the Clarets defence, only to drag his effort wide of the post on 19 minutes. At the other end, Danny Ings had Tim Howard worried for a split second when the Burnley striker attempted an audacious strike from long-range, comfortably held by the American shot stopper in the end. The continuation of Barnes at left midfield is now a stubborn mistake... and i said thast to the Mrs before he was sent off...
and in all honesty the lad has been a sending off just waiting to happen.

Doomed. Fair play to Leicester I thought they were dead and buried but can't see us beating them off our current forms.

I agree with the first part of your statement DT. The sending off may be a blessing in disguise as SD with have to play a 'proper' winger/midfielder in his place. If we beat Leicester we will stay up. If we do not then it is over I reckon.
There is no doubt that SD has been a revelation as manager of BFC. My only criticism would be his reluctance to use his substitutes. Yesterday we knew that for 45 minutes we only had ten men. Fresh legs earlier than employed would have been the order of the day for me.
Goals are in short supply but Boyd last week and Jones this week show just how narrow is the gap between success and failure.

Jeeze I wouldn'twant some of you guys in the trenches with me.we will run the balls off of Leicester and if they leave the turf with any points they will probably have earned them.SD it's up to him now,stick with more of the same or do what he did when we faced Wigan last season.Holding Everton and still creating chances after the run we have had.....with ten men was amazing.............the last thing they need is any neggoes in the camp.No time for losers.

Look General Brian Melchett, we have been in the trenches together all season. It is not negative to suggest that after going over the top in the same manner 32 times (not at WBA) perhaps different tactics might produce a winning result, hence Barnes' red card may yet prove a good thing. Nor is it negative to suggest that using fresh legs a little earlier may be appropriate when ten men are running their @#$%& off resupplying ammunition.
As for the Leicester game, wars can ultimately be won or lost on one battle. For us that battle will be next Saturday. Waving a white flag does not mean surrendering but a request for a parley but for BFC it would be remarkable if a loss next week does not mean ultimate defeat.
I thought the performance yesterday was a very brave one, yet another 'if' and 'may have been' and all credit to the players and staff but it was ultimately another loss against an economically superior force. I hope we will not end up this season as the mouse that roared.

I said to MH on't Turf two months ago that Leicester would be the game that sent us down. Looks like I was wrong, we'll stagger on for a few more games after Leicester have beaten us before our fate becomes inevitable, Leicester will just be knocking a couple more nails in the coffin.
Fresh legs, earlier substitutions, Keira, Taylor or Wallace starting out left, you're just re-arranging the deckchairs on the Titanic lads.

IF we go down will we be the richest club in the second tier since United were relegated many moons ago.... financially perhaps the richest club ever relegated?

you mean like last time ? you must be very naïve to believe this, most of the top half of the championship have a higher wage bill than we do in the prem.

And supposing we stay up, another £100m or so will come rolling in. But will we spend much/any of it in a bid to be competitive and stay up ? Of course we won't, we'll be condemned to another season of chasing our tails against superior teams, which I'm bored to tears watching. If you want a repeat of this tedious, monotonous season then fair enough, I don't, relegation can't come soon enough for me.

Well what a shite day out. Took us nearly three and half hours to get there. Didnt get on ground till 10 minutes after kick off. Terrible view from the stand.
Then to see a fairly limp performance. Jones should have scored, but other than that we never looked like scoring a goal. And another pleb performance from that ref.
Dont agree with the above about Barnes. We are going to miss him, he's been one of our best players this season. Would have preferred to see him back up top instead of Vokes, at least we might look capable of scoring then.
Do agree with getting a natural wide player on though. Dont know what Knightly has done wrong.

Bit of a mystery isn't it Fred. I don't particularly rate him, but he can cross the ball, he is a bit of a goal threat, he works as hard as any when I've watched him, and it's not as though anyone has done any better in the wide position since he's been ignored. No idea why he isn't used any more, he's got the wrong side of Sean for some reason though. Wonder if we'll ever find out.

Not doing ratings, its difficult to give an accurate appraisal from the vantage point.
But i would give Heaton a 9, he kept us in the game, and not just with the penalty save.
The best outfield player by far was Duff. All the the other defenders were ok.
All the midfield and forwards were well below par, particularly Jones, Boyd and Vokes.

Barnes should have been moved back into the middle and Vokes benched two or three games ago.
That's Barnes' best place.
Then Kightly can come in with the unexpected... you never know where his cross will go.. but he does get some over.
Or now he is fit Taylor can play left midfield.
At least with Barnes out Dyche has to do something new at last.
Replace Vokes with the Jut? Can't see that happening.
Sordell wide left? or the logical choice Kightly or Taylor

Corporal Brian Clott more like, when was the last time you saw a General in the trenches Soapy ?.There are no strategic withdrawals on offer in this campaign and no reinforcements due.The remaining six battles are against enemies who are merciless and will not be taking prisoners so surrender is not an option either.I am, if you reread my post, subtlety agreeing with yourself and DT regarding changes whilst bearing in mind BC's comments about shuffling deck chairs. Kill the doom and gloom we are worry free.......
