Burnley recorded their fourth successive league victory as they overcame a plucky MK Dons 2-1 at Turf Moor. The Clarets took the lead twice in the game, one in each half when Sam Vokes gave Burnley the lead before George Boyd cancelled out Carl Baker’s equaliser.

Sean Dyche named an unchanged side for a third game in a row on a night where victory propelled them into third place in the Sky Bet Championship. The first chance of the game fell for Dons’ winger Robert Hall, who fired his strike inches over Tom Heaton’s crossbar. But the deadlock should have been broken 15 minutes in when Andre Gray was played in on goal after a neat flick-on from Vokes, but the striker couldn’t steer the ball either side of keeper David Martin. On the half hour mark the Clarets almost took the lead once more as David Jones’ inswinging corner was met by Michael Keane, but the defender saw his header skim out off the crossbar. And just a minute later another chance went begging as Ben Mee played a long ball over Dons’ defence to Gray, who was being handled all the way, but the forward’s heavy touch meant the chance got away. But just a minute later the Clarets were ahead with a thunderbolt! Michael Kightly nutmegged right-back Jordan Spence to tee up Vokes, who rifled a venomous effort into the top left corner past the hapless Martin.

Poor goal to concede but we never paid attention to what they been trying all game. Goalkeepers been kicking it out of play more times than not from goal kicks aiming for their winger right on the touchline. Each time they've had their opposite winger hugging the other touchline.
This time they keep the ball in, switched it quick and their oppo winger has time to pick out s cross to the back stick for simple nod in.

They did play a bit better, they should have won more comfortably, but they're still only firing on two cylinders. There's an awful lot of improvement to come yet and I can't remember seeing a team play as poorly as we have in the last two games and yet create so many chances.
Very impressed with Andre, he fluffed three good chances but the way he creates space for himself and gets himself into scoring positions is a rare talent. I think at Championship level it'll be next to impossible to mark him out of a game.

SD seems to be taking a completely different approach in his use of players...if we are playing at the bottom of our game which we seem to be doing one can only imagine if we actually kick into gear.As for our signings it would appear we are getting it right, we should kick on a level and not pat ourselves on the back.And the win !brilliant.

I can believe that 39% stat, just like against Wednesday we were on the verge of being over-run at times last night. We aren't pressing as far up the pitch this season, we can't because Gray is playing for the most part as a lone striker with Vokes dropping off him, so the opposition are able to work the ball up the pitch a lot easier than they used to, and we're standing off more and allowing them to do it. When we get it we struggle to play the ball out of defence and end up hoofing it, which usually ends up just giving them the ball back and the cycle starts again. We also lost the ball from at least 6 of our throw-ins in the first half, the possession stats aren't going to look good when you can't retain the ball even from your own throws.
Nevertheless we keep winning.

As I recall in the promotion season we averaged about 40% possession.
Way more to come from this team and I can't help but think that will not come until we get the balance in the middle.

strange all round... on chances spurned and close attempts could have had six. And yet there's still no fluidity and the number of times the ball is whacked over midfield to the front two is not pretty.
And again we end up hanging on for the last 20 mins.

The opposition have probably learned how to shut our usual game down which means we have to move on and have a plan B.If you can win whilst adjusting what can you say.What if we had scored a couple of the missed ones? totally different game.

I can't believe that figure LS, if 40% was the average it must mean that in many games we were down to the low 30s, and I don't think that was ever the case. I wouldn't be surprised if we were averaging 40% last season in the PL, but I'd think it was higher the season before. Is there any source currently available to check possession stats from previous seasons, I don't know of one ?

I will see if I can dig out the stats - though I am referring more to the modal average, and as I recall it was around 40% - could well just have been a perception though.

Found it LS, 48.7% possession in 13/14. Only 6 teams with less, just shows you don't need to dominate possession to win a game, or even to win promotion.

Refreshing to see that Dyche finally has players he's happy to bring off the bench, too. We could do so well this season if we have good fortune with injuries/suspensions.

Really? Fair-dos. Just saw a few comments on Twitter praising him yesterday. I know he's not the answer in that position, but from what others were saying it was one of his better games there.

Long and Hennings coming on (or Vokes and Gray going off) was the catalyst for the nervy last 15 minutes, neither looked near good enough, long marginally the better off the 2.
On Possesion BC I agree, it's become an obsession rather than a means to an end. If I recall Chelsea had something ridiculous like 15% in the Champs League final they won. You also have I look at where the opposition had their Possesion and where you had yours. Again if have to check but I think we may have had marginally 'better' Possesion stats in the PL!

Thought long was s liability when he came on myself. Gave away far too many silly free kicks which allowed them to pump the ball back up to the edge of our area late on.

Jabber, Arfield I suppose did have one of his better games, which isn't saying much. There were quite a few times when I was watching us struggle to play the ball out of defence and thinking how much we missed Marney's ability to make himself available and get upfield with the ball, again when MK were cutting through our midfield like a knife through butter, I was thinking they wouldn't find it so easy if Marney was there.
Our midfield is most definitely a weak link when Arfield's in it, but it's not his fault, he is what he is and he does his best.
