      And a stout second half rearguard, led magnificently by central defensive pairing James Tarkoswki and Ben Mee, protected Nick Pope in goal to earn another precious three points on the road and lift Burnley to sixth in the table.

      Sean Dyche – looking for the 100^th win of his managerial career, fielded the same starting 11 that drew with Huddersfield, while Everton dropped Wayne Rooney to the bench in a shuffle that saw Dominic Calvert-Lewin partner Oumar Niasse in attack.

    And in a quick start by the hosts, Niasse tested the gloves of Pope before the Clarets keeper got down well to deny Gylfi Sigurdsson following a quick break from a Burnley corner.

    The early pressure continued and Stephen Ward had to be alert to hack clear inside his own six-yard box after Niasse latched onto a clever flick to lift the ball over an advancing Pope.

     But Burnley slowly subdued the early charge and from their first patient passing move, Lowton’s low, deflected ball into the box was clawed away at full stretch by Jordan Pickford, as Chris Wood stretched to try and connect.

    And following a magnificent move involving every outfield player other than Ben Mee, the Clarets struck the crucial blow in the 21^st minute.
