Erik Pieters has been in football long enough to see most things but he hadn't witnessed anything quite like his Burnley exit. The 34-year-old left Turf Moor in the summer after a lack of communication from a Clarets hierarchy who then refused to let him train with the club to maintain his fitness and increase the body count in pre-season. It was a sad end to an enjoyable chapter of the Dutchman's career.

He's enough experience to feel too hard done by but, as he sits down for a coffee and a chat with Lancs Live, it's clear he's still perplexed about the way his time at Burnley ended. The initial message from the ownership had been that they wanted to retain Pieters and an opening offer was made part way through last season. It was rejected by the player, as most first offers are, and the left back expected talks to continue as the two parties sought a compromise to what Pieters felt was the outcome desired by both. I have not heard the other side to this but I do not care, I will go with Erik's version especially after how they dismissed SD and his staff.
