Burnley 1 Wolves 1

Burnley are through to the 3rd Round of the Carling Cup after beating Wolverhampton Wanderers on penalties. Brian Jensen was the Burnley hero after saving 2 penalties in normal time.

Steve Cotterill made a couple of changes to the team that drew at Leicester. Brian Jensen came in for Danny Coyne and Micah Hyde came in for Frank Sinclair. The side lined up roughly as follows:

         Blake Moore

John McGreal came off midway through the 1st half and was replaced by Frank Sinclair. Wolves opened the scoring just before the interval when Seol tapped home from close ranger. Robbie Blake put Burnley back on level terms just after the restart when he scored from a Mo Camara cross.

Brian Jensen then saved 2 penalties in 5 minutes when he dived to his left to save from Carl Court and then dived to his right when Keith Andrews took the 2nd penalty.

The game went into extra time with the visitors hitting the bar and the post in one move. So the match went to penalties.....

Burnley won 4-2 and go into the hat for the next round with the draw taking place this evening.

Steve Cotterill had this to say after the match.....

"It has been a long night for us, too long because we’ve got tired players and a game coming up on Saturday, Other than that we are pleased to be through, but we didn’t need extra time at all, not one iota."

 

"In the first half I don’t think we looked like we wanted to go out and win the game and I said that at half time. We were a bit sharper in the second half and were more forceful but the trouble was we did it for twenty minutes and then didn’t do it in the last twenty minutes and we’ve ended up with a bigger electricity bill."

"The players all worked hard throughout and I was pleased with them. I thought they all covered every blade of grass from kick off right until the end of the game. I just hope we have enough legs for Saturday now, but we showed great energy so I thank the lads for that. Hopefully we have a bit left in the tank."
