The Trust and Longside at 5 a side

For the fifth annual Anti Racism 5-a-side Tournment the LONGSIDE LOUNGE and the Clarets Trust both had teams. This is how they got on...

5th Annual Anti Racism 5-a-side

The 5th Annual Anti Racism 5-a-side took place on Sunday with the Clarets Trust team going all the way to the final...

The competition consisted of ten teams and was played in a great spirit by all. The teams were split into two groups, with the Clarets Trust team winning their group after a fantastic 3 wins and 1 draw. The Bengal Stars joined the Trust in the semis by the closest of margins. Bairstowe Eve walked their own group and were narrowly beaten by Bengal Stars in their semi final. After going a goal down in their semi final the Clarets Trust team cruised to a 6-1 win to book their place in the final.

Unfortunately for the Clarets Trust they had used up all their goals in their semi final and lost a very close final 1-0 to a great near post effort. Congratulation to Bengal Stars, who won for an impressive fourth year in a row!! That's a fantastic achievement in the middle of Ramadan and we hope to see everyone again next year.

Thanks go to Meg for the sandwiches and Bev for the much needed drinks. Thank you to BFC Leisure Centre for hosting us so well, Sheffield Trophy Centre for such excellent trophies, East Lancs Partnership for funding most of the event along with When the Ball Moves and the Clarets Trust. Once again, thank you to everyone who took part and thanks to Wade Elliott, Chris McCann and Danny Karbassiyoon for presenting the trophies and completing a great day. Thanks also to their manager Steve Cotterill and Edoardo Abis for arranging this.

As for THE LONGSIDE we were represented by our own team thanks to Moth_Boy and Scott. Scott sent us this report.

"We assembled at 09:55 and introduced ourselves…the team comprising of Moth Boy, Scott, Chris, Tim, and a couple of others. We were drawn Group B comprising of 5 teams (Clarets Trust, Central Lancs, Bengal Stars (winners last year), Stellavision (runners up last year).

Our first game was against Clarets Trust. We started brightly (just like the Clarets), kept it together for the first 6 minutes, before they scored their 1st. Then the bright youngster came on (Scott youngest team member), to try and spark the team on but with only 3 mins left there was insufficient time. We battled hard in the second half but lost 1-0.

2nd game – Bengal Stars…they were VERY good and thrashed us 5-0.. Enough said.

3rd game – Stellavision - A similar game to the 1st kept it together, marking the opposition, but with a couple of minutes to go they scored, by nutmegging our keeper (MothBoy) – Result 1-0.

4th Game – Central Lancs ……An excellent game, our best, managed to keep it all square at 0-0. Brilliant play by ourselves and managed to score our first goal in the tournament – scorer was TOM…………celebrated wildly. Kept the lead for about 1 min 55 secs, bad defending resulted in us conceding our 8th goal of the tournament, Central Lancs equalised making it a final score of 1-1.

We therefore propped up the group being the strongest team and were eliminated.

It has to be pointed out that they team had never met before the day and massive credit for them having a go. Next year we will be much better and ready, Bengal Stars WATCH OUT! Thanks for your report Scott.
