In his first ever Longside Article, Claret Andy gives his views from the couch on Burnley 1-0 Hull. First home win in front of Sky since 2002....
A View from the Couch
Final Score: Burnley 1-0 Hull
For the first time since March 2002 Burnley managed a home win in front of the Sky Sports cameras, and although this was not quality viewing, getting the three points was all that mattered!
The game started with Hull on top as Burnley found it difficult to get into the game. As Steve Cotterill said ‘We looked like a team that had played 3 games in 6 days’. The first goalmouth action saw Hull test Brian Jenson in the nets and he responded well tipping a header round the post. Burnley responded well on the half hour as a Garreth O’Conner cross was deflected into the path of Ade Akinbiyi. With three defenders around him Akinbiyi controlled the ball well before turning and firing a right footed shot into the bottom corner of the net. 1-0 Clarets.
That gave Burnley confidence and they nearly doubled their lead after the Hull keeper Myhill made a mess of a cross and presented Garreth O’Conner with the ball just outside the box. Unfortunately his effort went inches wide of the right hand post. Burnley continued to put Hull under pressure, although Jenson was called into action on the stroke of half time as he blocked a close range effort. The second half started with Gifton Noel-Williams coming on as substitute for John Spicer and the game continued where the first half left off. Burnley should have wrapped the game up as efforts from Noel-Williams and Lowe all came close without really testing Myhill, but again Jenson had to come to the rescue. Firstly Stuart Elliott saw an excellent effort hit the bar and then with the last kick of the game Elliott again struck but saw his shot saved by Jenson as he turned away to celebrate. The save was the best of the night and Jenson is now showing how good a keeper he is and why he feels he should be considered for Denmark. Hull and Peter Taylor felt they deserved a point from the game. They probably did but that’s football. Steve Cotterill sounded relieved to get the three points, and man of the match was Brian Jenson.
