SCARF Presentation Day
Youngsters from two local schools came together for the culmination of the SCARF Project (Schools Citizenship Anti Racism and Football) on Tuesday afternoon, following nine weeks of anti racist education and activities, in conjunction with Burnley Football Club and Lancashire County Council.
Pupils from Cherryfold Primary and Barden Junior Schools have been enjoying sporting activities with the Burnley FC Community Programme whilst also learning about the evils of racism.
The project began in October when the pupils received an hour of education from Jane Richmond of Lancashire CC before the club’s Community staff took over for an hour of physical activity in sports such as football, cricket, cheerleading and fitness.
After the first week, school staff took over the anti-racist sessions and BFC staff continued with the sporting activities. Following eight weeks of this programme at the respective schools, both sets of pupils were treated to a trip to the Turf Moor Leisure Centre where they both came together for more activities and anti-racist education this week.
The day ended with a presentation in which all of the pupils were given a certificate, a Burnley FC anti-racism team poster and a special t-shirt with which to remember their time.
It is the second year in which Burnley Football Club and Lancashire CC have joined forces in this project and Assistant Community Manager Nick Harrison said: “It has been an outstanding success again and all of the pupils thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
“Not only does it assist in the education of anti-racism, but it also allows the pupils to take part in physical activity which otherwise they might not have been able to do."
“Then they came together at the Leisure Centre for the final session and had the opportunity to meet new friends by partaking in activities with the other school.”
Jane Richmond also added: “This project works so well in not only getting anti-racist messages across to the children but also for them to put it into practice by meeting up and mixing with children in the town from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.”
