Yates Leaves Turf Moor
The 35-year-old had two spells as a player at the Aggborough Stadium and was club captain during his time there, most recently in the 2003/04 campaign before he joined the Clarets where he was also the reserve team manager.
He had been linked with the job over the last few weeks since former boss Stuart Watkiss left the post in December and Clarets manager Steve Cotterill wished Yates the best of luck in his new role.
"We thank Mark for what he has done here and I'm disappointed to lose one of my staff, especially Mark who I've been with now for quite a few years," said Cotterill.
"We wish him the best in his new opportunity and role. It happened very quickly, but it wasn't out of the blue and I've probably known about this for a little while now."
"He's a great lad and he's been with me as a player and a coach and this year, I thought he has been better than he was last year."
"Last season was probably a learning curve for him, his first coaching job and I think he now wants to have a crack at being a manager."
"So good luck to him because he's a great lad and we wish him all the best there and I hope he goes and does a good job for them."
In terms of finding a replacement for Yates, Cotterill added: "I've got quite a few thoughts and theories but because it has happened so quickly, I need some time now to digest what's happened and what we're going to do and how we're going to address it."
