Wenger in shock signing of Silvestre

By Boris Mellor
August 20 2008

Wenger has taken Arsenal fans by surprise with his two year signing of Man Utd's defender Silvestre. It's unusal for Wenger to sign players of that age, especially on the claimed 2 year deal. Also its been a long time since a player has moved between the two clubs. If my memory serves me correctly at least 27 years when Stapleton went in the opposite direction.

(Memory poor as ever, Noble Trojan tells me it was Viv Anderson in 1987. Any further bids? Ed)

However Sivestre has experience right across the defence, centre and wide. Clearly this is not the midfield signing that is promised, but he could possibly steady a defence that has a tendency to lose concentration.

Mikael Silvestre, Manchester United

Fish Faced Headbutter has arrived

Perhaps Arsene has bought him to take the heat off Adebayor, someone else for the boo boys to have a go at.

(Sm22) I think its done the trick Padre. Silvestre makes Ade look like Mother Teresa.

What a F**k, did we had to sign injury prone people the whole season? Nasri, Bischof, and the hell with silvestre. Why does wenger to renew player's contracts correctly when at the age of 30 just to turn up and sign Michael. I think we are screwed in the next season.

Or is that small thing of saying that if it was the experiance, there i have signed an experianced defender. holy @#$%&......

Silvestre is back up for Clichy, and an emegency CB, thats it.

People complain that Traore isn't ready yet to be the back LB but also complain when AW signs a decent back up LB in Silvestre.

Also, NO Silvestre is not gonna be ahead of either Senderos, Djourou or even Song. Silvestre will only play at CB is we are bare bones at CB, like when Gilberto played at CB.

Silvestre will allow Traore to develope, maybe by going on loan. The two year contract suggests this.

The only problem with this signing is that Silvestre is another sicknote.

According to the commentator for the England vs Czech game "word on the street is Wenger sees Mikael as a centre half not a left back"

Thats BS.

Also this isn't our last signing of this summer.

The solid DM/CM is coming.

Well critics keep saying there is not enough experience in the club.

Quote Wenger: Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger said: “We have a strong squad but a young squad and Mikael’s versatility, experience and calibre will provide the extra depth we need to reinforce our challenge for honours this season. His defensive adaptability will serve us well and it’s a big plus that Mikael has top level experience and a great understanding of football in the Premier League.”

Mikael will join up with his team-mates immediately and will wear shirt number 18.

Anderson in 1987 is the last one I can find. The Clough thing is a joke I assume?

Woops sorry I meant Brian Kidd, he was the last player to move down south from Manchester back in 1974.

My Gooner mates reckon Touré is going to be moved to defensive midfield and Silvestre will slot in at CB.

Don't see what you guy's are moaning about, he's always been fairly solid for Man United and considering there are few players at Arsenal with such Premiership and title winning experience I'd have thought he'd be a welcome buy.

True but several moved North after that.

By the way Gunner Josh, Arsenal.Com confirm its a 2 year contract and I got that news before they published it. So I do think the source has some value.
