Goal crisis continues- Wenger says Song will be centre back

Arsenal have now scored 10 goals in two premiership matches, but not all fans are celebrating. I assume that when Manchester United had scored one goal in two matches their fans must have been suicidal. However, for some, the issue is that the forwards are not scoring.

Considering that there is only one striker in the present format it would be rather unrealistic to expect him to have scored the majority of the goals.  With Arshavin out on the wing it is also difficult for him to score, but surely the important thing is that the whole team is scoring.

Wrong Sort of Goal 

Nor is it the case that the attacking players are not playing an effective role.  Eduardo pulled off a brilliant dummy and final pass for Diaby to score the opening goal.  Diaby turned up in the centre forward position to finish off a classic example of Wenger ball.

Van Persie admits he is finding it difficult to adjust to his new role, but it is early days and no doubt he will soon enough.  Football fans are truly amazing, who would guess that some fans would be moaning at 12 goals in three games.  It's not so long ago that Arsenal fans were complaining that our midfielders rarely scored, now they do and it's a new source of complaint.

I doubt if Arsenal will have an easier match this season, the only risk was that the team would switch off for too long, that nearly happened, but at 3-1 the game was out of sight.  Almost as irritating as the team switching off at two nil was the fans Ole'ing the Gunners every pass.  Surely that is encouraging the team to show boat?  Also it's the best way to motivate the opposition.

Scoring four goals was enjoyable, conceding was a pain and shows the defence still has some work to do in training, but it was a pleasant afternoon in the North London sunshine.  However it was hard to maintain enthusiasm throughout the match as the opposition was so weak.

Wenger on Song

It was ironic to hear people down the pub after the game expressing concern that Song may not be available for long periods in the coming season; they feared that his midfield enforcing role would be sorely missed.

They might have spluttered into their lager if they had read the manager's programme notes.  Wenger praised Song's midfield performances and went on to say, "I still feel he will ultimately be a centre back, and that he is already a very good one today.  But we have good centre backs in our side and we need him in the midfield."

Wenger does love to tease, is he really saying that Song is moon lighting in midfield and will move into CB position when there is a vacancy?  Perhaps he is - I tend to agree that Song will make a very good CB. My guess is that Wenger still dreams of putting Diaby next to Fabregas. That was his intention the year Gilberto left, however, Diaby's injuries saw the post go to Flamini. Funny old game.
