The Glory Game Greatness Is as Greatness Does

Greatness
By Boris Mellor
February 18 2011

I can't remember a better evening match at home since beating Anderlecht in 1970 to win the Fairs Cup in 1970. The game and atmosphere was fantastic, neither team or crowd gave up at any stage. Indeed, the crowd were the eleventh man.

I say 11th, because Eboue wasn’t really there. There just aren’t enough clichés to describe what happened, goals change games, and perhaps Barca have learnt that tippy tappy football without scoring is meaningless. Perhaps they need a plan B, meanwhile Arsenal had to make do with Plan A.

In the Crazy World of Arsenal Speak more had turned up to see the mighty Wolves than Barcelona.  I couldn’t even sell off my ticket on the exchange for Wolves I am beginning to have serious doubts about the sanity of the accounts department.

The crowd was announced as just under 60,000. I couldn’t see an empty seat, the unsold seats must have been in the Barca end, not that I could see or hear the Catalonian fans; as I rushed into my seat with a couple of minutes to spare I was knocked out by the intensity of the Arsenal crowd.

The stadium was full of flag waving fanatics who had no doubt that Arsenal were the greatest team the world had ever seen, they hadn’t come to sit back and enjoy Barca’s flowing football, they had come to drive their own team on to historic victory. If they had any doubts they were hiding it well.

Every fan I spoke, and I spoke to quite a few, including four from this forum, on the way to my seat, was of one accord, this was no night for doubts, this was a night to be enjoyed. Even Sydney took a break from moaning and said it was important we relished the occasion, and refused to make one of his spooky predictions. It would be a great European occasion and Arsenal could win, we had a fit squad again, this wasn’t last year again. Only four players remained from that meeting.

TV Brainwashing

It’s true that Barca outplayed Arsenal in first half, but it was more about possession than shots on target. Yes Barca could have had two or three goals in the first half, but then so could have Arsenal. I don’t remember Barca doing that much in first 14 minutes, but I do remember Arsenal not making the best of a couple of very good chances.

One reason why Barca didn’t have more than one goal is due to the superb play of the ridiculously numbered 53 Szczesny. I suppose to satisfy some pundits he should have just rolled over and let the Catalans tickle his tummy, instead, very unfairly, he made saves and when he couldn’t he cut the angles.

No panic, no bringing players down, just keeping on his feet and making himself big. I keep expecting to wake up and discover he is not the real deal after all, but at the moment he is incredible for his age. At last we have a true giant in front of the sticks. But this doesn’t count as good play but just unfairly stopping the mighty Catalans from fulfilling their destiny.

Turning Point?

At half time I felt that Arsenal were getting a grip, maybe it was wistful thinking, but I am sure the game was turning on 35 minutes, not just in the second half.

Anyhow at the half time de briefing none of us felt that downhearted, it only felt like a flesh wound, and we believed that the Gunners could get back into it.

The crowd started the second half with renewed vigour, and the team were increasingly getting used to playing without the ball. I remember writing a year ago to Myles Palmer that I felt Arsenal’s problem was they don’t know how to play when they haven’t got the ball, but now they were getting the hang of it. Indeed Cesc raised the issue in his programme notes.

It meant not panicking when Barca had the ball, but exploiting the wide open spaces that Barca leave unattended, when you do get the ball. Hence Arsenal’s breakaways got better and better, but no end product.

Second Turning Point

Finally the balance was tipped with Song taken off and Arshavin put on, this was a brilliant gamble by Wenger. Simon who sits next to me said he was worried about the possible consequences of taking off the only holding midfielder. I replied, firstly we are not holding them so why worry, and secondly that we needed more mobility in attack.

Arsenal can never stop Barca’s coming forward, the best form of defence is attack. Ironically as Wenger stepped up his attacking options Guardiola cut his back by taking of Villa and putting on Keita. Now the match really switched in Arsenal’s favour.

Madness and greatness

What followed was one of the maddest four minutes I will ever live through, unless the bomb arrives over London. On 79 minutes Van Persie exploited a gap between Valdes and the near post, which from my seat looked almost impossible to do, slamming the ball between the keeper and the woodwork.

The crowd went hysterical, and I was surprised still to be in my row at the end of it, the famous Arsenal roar of the 30s was reborn.

Greatness is as greatness does

Arsenals Andrey Arshavin (right) celebrates with team-mate Nicklas Bendtner (left) after scoring the

Only four minutes later Arshavin scored one of the greatest goals in Arsenal history. What was great about it? Well you could try five passes, 18 seconds, 92 metres and a scintillating finish. Koscielny to Bendtner to Fabregas to Nasri to Arshavin – goal!!! But that just wasn’t all, it was the context, it was the first time Arsenal have ever beat Barcelona so it was historic, it also exposed the Catalonian’s as occasional show ponies. Yes they had played some great football, but they didn’t make it count did they?

Suddenly no one knew anyone who had any doubts about Arshavin, the crowd roared and sang his name. Now I was body surfing being thrown from one seat to the next, slight exaggeration, but I was being buffeted all over the place, it felt quite risky I longed for the safety of the terraces, but it was also exhilarating. Grown men were almost crying, hugging people they didn’t know, people were laughing, cheering, shouting, flag waving, high fiving, jumping over seats, it was bedlam and it was great.

Who was the cause?

A little sad looking Russian bloke, who talks like he is on moggadon when interviewed, and like George Washington can never tell a lie. A player who miss kicks every other ball, who rarely tackles back, and when he does he often fluffs it, but I don’t care, nor did a stadium packed full of Arsenal fans. They streamed out singing his name, and one other name, Jacky, Jacky Wilshere. Ah the wisdom of crowds; there was one other name they should have been singing, but most can’t pronounce it, but surely we can create a song that rhymes with 53?

I couldn’t find a fan who thought that Arshavin wasn’t good enough, or it was time for him to move on, for greatness is as greatness does Andre is great, he will live forever in the annals of Arsenal history. No one will ever show a video of his miss hit passes, but he will remain forever 30 years old as the video re runs him in slo mo scoring a most glorious goal against football’s Harlem Globetrotters.

Oh to be a Gooner

The crowd left singing long into the night, celebrating; at work the following morning the staffroom was populated with bleary eyed but very happy Gooners. The few Chelsea and Tottenham fans could only content themselves with muttering it’s only the first leg. Good job they told us, the team might not have turned up for it. No time to worry about the next leg, enjoy this now and for as long as you can.

 Glory Game

Better 5 minutes in the sun, than a lifetime in the shade. This wasn’t a Mourinho victory of parking the bus, Wenger dared to play them in the open, he didn’t try to bore them to death, this was truly the Glory Game. And yes I do know Blanchflower was a Totteham player, but that was in the days when there was a football club over there.

Great post

For atmosphere, it reminded me of the Tony Adams 4th goal against Everton to win the League - the North Bank upper swayed up and down so violently that I got scared and left halfway through the celebrations !

Watching the Arshavin goal again made me realise how fantastic it was - being in the front row lower behind the OTHER goal (picked the wrong one again !) didn't give such a good view at the time !

And how right you are about Arshavin - have people forgotten his 4 against Liverpool ? - Wilshere and Szczesny.

I thought Koscielny was immense on the night too. Thank God Sagna will be back though for Part Two.

I sense victory is possible.

it nailed the analysis of this game.. possession without goals or possession with 'could have scored from chances created' doesn't mean anything...ask arsenal about this...ask arsenal about this after every game with utd.. barca and their fans can say they played well, had all the possession and could have scored but the stats showed that we had 7 attempts on target to their 5. if we are to dwell on the could have of barca then i can say that we could have won by 3 goals if arshavin returned cescs pass in that final breakaway before the game ended...

may be like you pointed out, everyone expected our young keeper to roll over and bow for messi and the bunch to go gun blazing..

at times i felt we played with a very high line which gave messi space to exploit and even barca didn't play that much high up and i guess they were very much afraid of theo's pace...i still felt he would have been better as a sub when barca would have started tiring...

barca underestimated arsenal especially when they had better possession but i guess they will be better ready for us at nou camp.

like you pointed out i felt pep showed lack of respect when he pulled off villa and brought in keita..they had the possession so what was the point..

there was nothing lucky about this win. we battled hard against the best team in the world and came out on top..the war will be more fierce at the nou camp and if we score 1st we must be ready for what will come and if we weather the storm, then who knows...hopefully we would have all our players fit.

Can We Now Trust The Process 🤔🤷🏿‍♀️ or Should We Still Remain Cautious 🙇🏿‍♀️

Guys in AT..Merl and I are the proud innovator of the terminology called 'crab football'..use it Padre..and remember you liked the term too and used it in the past..

I sware..at the end of 1st half and off an on at the initial stage of 2nd half..those triangle passing and turning back with some flicks and back heels..reminded me of the term 'crab football'..well they thought without committing much and keeping the possession plus by counter attacking they will end the match..I still agree that was the right decision from Pep though going gung ho in Emirates could backfire even badly..but Barca proved a point they normally don't have a plan B..and Wenger needs to exploit that in 2nd league..

I thought we played 'Mourinho football' to be honest. 2 banks of 5 then chose our moments and made our goals count with the minimum of attackers springing forward very quickly and completing moves of the utmost quality. Thats what Mourinho does.

And there arent many people who can finish like Arshavins finish, first time sidefoot back accross the keeper from the edge of the box. As he ran towards the crowd with everyone jumping about I hope some of them felt embarrassed at all the moans and groans they had been giving him not 2 weeks back. A nice little f*ck you to the bandwagon jumpers, that goal was.

two banks of five?

assuming you meant to banks of four can we not give jose mourinho credit for that

we were certainly defensively disciplined but it wasn't mourinho style... more arrigo sacchi if anything... pressed high up the pitch with a short distance between midfield and attack

we were playing on the counter but it was still a positive attacking performance

the average positions they have HERE are quite interesting...

Ok look YM you should know by now I dont spend every waking moment soaking up football tactics. It looked pretty defensive and disciplined to me - then suddenly a couple of chaps sprung forward and got a goal. Chelsea used to do it with just Joe Cole and Drogba, Liverpool semi final a few years back comes to mind. Makes a change from a few CL games in the past for example Man United 2 years ago where we ran all round the pitch passy passy nicey nicey then oops same thing was done to us. THats about as far as my tactical analysis goes mate.

i'm in full agreement... it was a mature and sensible performance... but i've heard people claim that we abandoned our style or somesuch... it was the exact way we've been striving to play all season... pressing high, knicking the ball early etc.

you obviously come off looking more defensive when the opponents are as good as they are but it was far from a typical mourinho attempt at stifling a match... if anything it was more like what he tried to do earlier in the season and got stuffed 5-0

I think this team could match that team in most departments. We certainly have a better central midfield and a better right back.

im sorry to say that i didnt. I was very pleased, but in actual fact my daughter was upstairs crying with bad earache and actually I spent a lot of the game running up and downstairs making sure she was OK.

I am afraid family issues have spoiled our most exciting moments of this season so far. For the Chelsea home game I was stuck in my mother in laws cottage in rural france listening to five live in bed with bad guts, and then i couldnt really go to the game this week due to work and also then Katie got ill.

and I am afraid to be honest despite all the hullabaloo on here, the league still comes well before the CL for me.

the most mental I have gone for any goal this season would still be song v West ham, by a country mile.

Yes Padre..our crab used to be more slower..side passing, friendly passing, no shooting and unimaginative. I remember when we came up with this term last season between Feb March to end of the season(crab at it's peak)..but with rejuvenated Walcott, Nasri and new bloke Chamakh and Sagna at wing with Wilshere replacing Denilson and Diaby the crab football was altered. Must mention Song's role has also been changed...I must say it is unreasonable to compare our last seasons crab with Barcelona's version of little crab...coz they have some exceptional direct players who actually use the crab(unnecessary possession and passing) as their strength. I think it is difficult for Barcelona to change their style completely coz of some of their midfielders are good on holding the ball rather than defending and absorbing attacks or deal with counter attacks. Anyway, that's their style of play so who cares..

By the way, I still agree with Celine..league is more important and realistic trophy to win coz beating Barcelona wouldn't increase chances of winning CL anything drastically..

Sandy is right, Wilshere goes forward where Denilson used to go sideways. I dont think Wilshere is quite at the level some people are putting him at, but even at 19 he has FORWARD THRUST. Imagine what he'll be like at 23. Doesnt bear thinking about.

Indeed. @#$%& a mourinho, it was classic Arsene Wenger football. Barca are one of the few teams we can really play like that against anymore. No other team would be flooding so many men forward and playing so high when drawing away from home with ten minutes to go

i think you may have nailed it there.

I always remember watching the 2004 cup semi v United and then the 'Rooney game' that finished our invincible run and thinking 'United are a big team, why arent they ATTACKING us?' but of course nobody does that against us, they just wait for a f*ck up from our back line and soak up our front players. The stronger players like Djourou and Koscielny become, plus the massively influential mr song, the more we can get back to where we were.

i think we may be on our way, seriously.
