Injury Curse Has Struck Vermaelen

By Boris Mellor
September 5 2011

There is news from an Arsenal Times source, that is usually reliable, that Vermaelen's ankle operation was not succesful and that he has had to have another operation.

It could be two months or more before he can play. The news has not been officially announced yet so we cannot confirm if this report is true. If it is, it raises serious issues, including was Mertesacker signed to cover for him rather than expand the squad.

Stop press.

Since this was posted I have seen back page of Mirror which states it is the same achilles heel operated on earlier this year, and expected recovery is two months.

Whatever the reason, the signing of Mertesacker is a blessing in disguise.

That 8-2 OT Aftermathindicated clearly that we missed the leadership and organisational ability of Vermaelen.

Per will provide that misisng "leadership" ingredient with Sagna and Koscielny providing pace to sweep behind him.

Thanks to all Football Gods that we luck out by meeting Swansea and not those hackers and kickers in Stoke City, Bolton and Blackburn immediately after internationals.

Would Johan and Per be Arsenals tallest ever CB pairing?

Since the end of WW1, 1919, when the FA restarted its 4 tier football league, with Arsenal fc in the 1st div, there’s only ever been one club to have never been relegated from Div 1/ EPL.

Arsenal fc

Let’s keep making history

Arsenal have played down initial fears that Thomas Vermaelen was facing several months on the sidelines by revealing that while the Belgian has undergone a minor surgical procedure to remove a tendon, he should be back in full training inside a month.

A statement on Arsenal.com reveals:

“Centre back Thomas Vermaelen is expected to be back in training with the first-team squad in around a month.

“Vermaelen has undergone a minor procedure to remove an inflamed plantaris tendon from his left ankle.

“This is the same treatment that he had on his right ankle in January this year and has nothing to do with his Achilles tendon.

“The action was taken after consultation with specialists who advised this was the best thing to do to prevent it becoming a persistent problem.”

Taking the above into consideration the centre-back will definitely miss matches against Swansea, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, the Champions League ties with Borussia Dortmund and Olympiacos and the Carling Cup match with Shrewsbury Town.

Who said it was his thigh?

As for the scaremongering that it was the same ankle etc?

You can't put that one on Arsenal I'm afraid.
