Would Racist Stoke Fans Like to Tell Us The Score?
Weve got Gervinho
By Boris Mellor
October 23 2011
Stoke fans are getting a reputation for being the nastiest fans in the premiership. Now I am not suggesting every Stoke fans is a racist, but the evidence from today’s game is that a sizeable majority of the away fans are. I am fortunate that I sit at the top of the North Bank, as far away as is possible from their racist, and other nasty, chants coming from these particular fans. However, celebrating the 3-1 win in the pub afterwards an Arsenal and Liverpool fan sitting next to the away fans told me how they had witnessed the racist abuse of a young Asian Arsenal Fan.
The fan who had been proudly standing up and showing his support for Arsenal was treated with “Paki, Paki, what’s the score” when Stoke equalised. Well dear racist muppets would you like to tell us the score now?
What a sad stain on a proud club with a wonderful anti- racist tradition, although I doubt if these ignorant louts know anything about it. But on the remote chance they might be interested I will remind them. Two of England’s finest footballers who dedicated their lives to fighting racism played for Stoke.
First Stanley Matthews, and then later George Eastham, spent much of their lives working in the townships of South Africa to encourage and train young black footballers discriminated against by a racist regime. They stood for the oppressed and against Apartheid’s attempt to ignore and destroy black football talent. How would they feel to hear this sickening mob of racists?
Eastham was an Arsenal favourite before he went to Stoke, and Matthews played for Arsenal during WWII. These links always made me fond of Stoke, and I was proud to be at Stoke for the game in Division 1 when Matthews became the first player to play a competitive league 1 game at the age of 50.
Arsenal fans adored Matthew’s and jeered any Arsenal player who dared to foul him, indeed even a robust tackle could earn a round of boos. Eastham was to become a Stoke Manager, a noted opponent of Apartheid and a holder of a 1966 World Cup medal. Eastham a founder of the South Africa Arsenal’s Supporters Club is now retired.
It is time that decent Stoke fans began to fight to restore the legacy of Eastham and Matthews, before it is erased by the stain of racism.
It seems insignificant to write about the match after such a disgraceful display of racism, but I am glad to say that the crowing of these louts was stuck back down their throats by a strong Arsenal second half performance. A good Gervinho goal was cancelled out by a lapse at the far post in the first half. However, Arsenal were far more determined in the second half, but Walcott was reluctant to score, so little was made of the pressure.
Once again Van Persie was central to the win, with all important help from Gervinho. I am not sure what was most important, that Arshavin came on, or that Walcott went off. Arshavin was far more searching and active, and I can’t help feeling that if he had had as many chances as Walcott had then the score would be very different. Without Walcott and Chamakh the whole team increased the tempo. Gervinho with a goal and two assists can be happy with his day’s work. Who knows he could become a bigger icon than Eboue.
In the end what had looked like a struggle at 70 minutes appeared to be a cakewalk on 90 minutes. The crowd were even oleing the team by the end of the game. The crowd cheered their heads off at the news of Citeh beating Man U 6-1, don’t analyse it, just enjoy. Then in the local pubs it was cheers all over again as QPR beat Chelsea 1-0. Almost a perfect day, but racism always leaves a nasty taste. Its time something was done.

Not surprising at all
Disgusting racism - kick it out ! BNP has long had a foothold in Stoke - remember at one point they had 9 (I think) councillors.
I too remember seeing Stanley Matthews play for Stoke v Arsenal.
Cautious improvement from Arsenal too. Who knows maybe a point v Chelski next week ?

it's a shame some stupid fans would choose to mare games by racist slurs.
Can We Now Trust The Process 🤔🤷🏿♀️ or Should We Still Remain Cautious 🙇🏿♀️
I thought I should wade in here as a Stoke fan who was at the game in the away end as my Arsenal housemate (not at the game) sent me this link to tease. I am sure there are racist people there in both ends but I didn't hear anything from a large section of supporters as you make out. The fact that you sit as far away as possible does make sense of your mishearing the exact words but you should be careful before making such wrong comments.
I sat about 5 rows back from the individual you say was standing to show his support, just on the other side of the home/away divide. Indeed he was showing his support, he even had 'We all follow the Arsenal' on his shirt and we liked him as he was good banter without sticking his fingers up or shouting "dirty cu#ts" which several Arsenal fans were led away by stewards for. We called him "Fatty" and the second Stoke scored a section of the crowd sang "Fatty fatty whats the score" no 'Paki'. No racism there, the guy wasn't even Asian... I suppose you couldn't see properly over there. There were loads of Stoke fans in the pubs afterwards drinking with Arsenal fans... we were and there were no problems.
On another note the Arsenal stewards are way to harsh.. with their own fans. Anyone who sings facing towards the away end are quickly told to shut up and then are ushered away by stewards or police 5 minutes later for nothing. In the second half Fatty himself was led away, he didn't stick his fingers up or shout anything that was over the top, in the end he was led away by several stewards and 2 police. There is always going to be banter between fans, some go over the top but for the majority its just a bit of fun, as long as it doesn't get over aggressive then the police should leave them to be as it causes more problems as other fans complain.
In the end Arsenal fans near the away end were taught to do what Arsenal do best and that's just to not sing at all.

The kid involved was slim and dark, and there was an outraged reaction from a lot of Clock End Fans.
Maybe you witnessed another incident

Quite fitting it was right infront of the ground
What were the odds!
Anyway just wanted to point out that the report is unfair and incorrect as over 1000 fans spent a lot of money and came down for a good day which despite losing we enjoyed in good spirit.
Cheers
The fact, as you agree, he wasnt fat does add to the confusion doesnt it?
my wittnesses are certain he was Asian, and quite a few Asian members of this blog have been called @#$%&by Stoke fans over the last few years.

legend.
If the majority were singing that then the club would have a lot to answer for to the FA but other than this report there is no mention. Just think about the attention Tottenham fans got for racist chants.
As to fans coming on here making racist comments then they do not represent the majority of Stoke fans and if you want proof of that you should just go and sit in the stoke end one day, they get behind the team and the atmosphere is amazing but no racism.
Also after the song fans in the clock end hardly went mad at us, they sat in silence until you scored number 2. Not that I blame them as stewards would have got rid of them anyway if they sang just like 'Fatty' who was just showing his support was.
I will agree on Sir Stanley Mathews been a legend though. Anyway my point which as an eye witness I hope you can appreciate is made, I wont go on.
Cheers

I also have a couple of stories from visiting the area. A few years ago I went to the Stoke Arsenal game and got Snooker balls thrown and me and my girlfriend. YES SNOOKER BALLS!
I also visited Nantwich in cheshire the evening of Ramsey's worst day. I was in a pub that was showing the game on MOTD and this scummy stoke fan stood up and pointed at the TV laughing and started to chant the one leg chant amongst some other horrible comments. After my cousin (who is also a gooner) asked him politely to sit down and shut up, he just continued. I ended up punching the guy out cold and as a non violent person i'm ashamed to say i resorted to that, but it felt right at the time.
They are evil, neanderthals who get away with far too much on and off the pitch.
But dont knock Neanderthals, they were a human species with far more skills than any racist. Some stoke fans do have links with BNP, but we should remember that the 9 @#$%& coucillors were defeated at last election, so there are good people in Stoke, as elsewhere

As for what you said Young Hans, that's sad to hear but there are certainly some pubs that breed that kind of behaviour and you wouldn't find me in there, the wrong pub at the wrong time. I assume the BNP sticker comment is an over exaggeration, just as the houses around the uni are terraced houses taken over by students from outside the area.
Having said that I am aware that there are a minority of BNP followers which is why they held a conference there (which was subject to protests like the ones outside the BBC) but there is a reason they didn't win and that's because the majority didn't vote for them, even the 'Neanderthals'.

As to the terraced houses, it may have been an exageration on my part but I certainly counted between 9/10 stickers in the window (it was around the General Election). But to be fair I did also see an old man handing out anti BNP leaflets at the station (which most people thought was pro BNP and promptly gave the man a dirty look)
Having said that let me not put you off a trip to Stoke, I would recommend a tour around the JCB Headquaters, Alton Towers or the Monkey Park in Treatham gardens any day to meet the good locals :-)
