Celine Dion's epic survey continues where part one left off with the best results and games of the season just past.
Section 2
Result of the Season
This one is open to interpretation. Some clearly voted for the most important or most impressive result, others for the one that gave them the most pleasure. Predictably, the 5-2 dismantling of Spurs at Home comes top with 80% of the votes, with the superb day out at Chelsea coming next. But there were other votes for Udinese away, clearly because it opened the gate to the CL, and a clever vote, I thought, for the 1-0 win at Everton, described as a ‘Championship winning type result’, something I agree with. The City Home game got mentions, but did not feature as prominently as I thought it would. Upon reflection, it is probably the most impressive of all our results last season.
Most Exciting Game
The Chelsea and Spurs game swap places here, with the see-saw 5-3 goal extravaganza at Stamford Bridge romping home with 40% of the vote. Spurs rolls in with 26%, perhaps because it was more of a procession than an exciting game for large parts of it. And of course the nail-biting 3-0 home leg against Milan is just behind. Exciting, but ultimately fruitless. Someone also found the 3-2 West Brom result very thrilling and put that at the top of their list.
Home Atmosphere of the Season
Obviously the Spurs game won here, with a good 80% of the vote. Trust me, you won’t get a better day out at Arsenal, unless, heaven forbid we actually win a trophy. Of course, people voted for games that they happened to be at, so we got some random ones. Milan home came second, and that was clearly a decent night, at least until it fizzled out at the end. But there were also votes for the Blackburn, Olympiakos, Newcastle, and QPR matches.
Away Fans of the Season
Regrettably, I will have to close this category due to lack of interest. In the spirit of European fraternity, and also because some of you seemed rather vague about exactly who you were voting for, a collective award goes to the European Fans from The Champions League group games. The award therefore goes to the massed ranks of the Marseilleise, the jolly fluorescent men from the Westfalensadion, and for what will presumably be the last European away trip for many of them, the passionate plate smashing Greeks of Olympiakos. Other mentions as always, go to the large travelling party that is Manchester United’s away support, and also Leeds in the cup, although of course we gave them about 5000 extra tickets.
Arsenal Fans Chant of the Season
Of course, I am after the most witty and side splitting effort, ‘Carlos Tevez, he plays when he wants...’, that sort of thing. But most of you prefer the extremely pedestrian ‘Robin Van Persie, he scores when he wants...’, which I will concede does stick in the memory, but is hardly the pinnacle of ingenuity. This song was by far the winner, but mentions went to the catchy ‘Adebayor, what’s the score?’, and various foul mouthed denunciations of Samir Nasri. We also had a vote for the collective gesture of the Poznan after we scored against Manchester City. However, I am cruelly disqualifying this vote, as the Poznan is not a chant.
Away Fans Chant of the Season
Another disasterous category in terms of votes. It appears most of you are either deaf, or, as some of you put it ‘prefer to ignore the away support’. This despite them normally being the loudest thing in the ground. Of those that got a vote, nothing stood out, some mentioned the now somewhat ironic Tottenham effort ‘Arsene Wenger, we want you to stay’, and my favourite was the Villa Fans ‘Emile Heskey, he scores when he wants’. But all in all, no clear winner, as nothing got more than one mention.
Away Trip of the Season
Not many votes. Those that went, enjoyed Chelsea, and that was the winner. Some enjoyed Udinese away, despite having appearing to be about 300 meters from the pitch, and the Anfield trip was also mentioned. But let’s be honest, not many of us go away, so this category is a bit of a waste of time.
