Arsenal lose art of winning - time for a boycott?
By Boris Mellor
January 6 2013
The underachievement and decline of the last 8 years continued with the farce at Swansea. Arsenal had the lead for all of 4 minutes before surrendering it, the Gunners were eight minutes away from clinching the game. Arsenal are incapable of holding a lead when the going gets really tough.
Swansea had a semifinal in the capital One Cup on their mind, and left Michu on the bench, true they brought him on early in the second half, but this game was for the taking. Arsenal played better than they have recently against Swansea, but that is not saying a lot. The finishing lacked purpose, and when it counted the defence cracked.
A replay could be an opportunity to protest at the decline of this once great club. Do you blame the players, was it a lack of effort or a lack of talent? My feeling is that is probably the latter, combined with poor leadership on and off the field. Wenger prattles on about his team’s determination and mental strength. What a joke, a team with mental strength would have held on to their lead.
Lack of talent a selling club
After all a club that constantly sells its best players and replaces them with inferior ones is hardly going to get better. Arsenal fans have to watch RvP score scintillating goals week in week out. Yes Podolski scored a fine goal today, but he should have been an addition not a replacement. And even with such a fine goal the jury is still out as to who the team’s actual striker is.
Meanwhile Wenger contradicts himself over transfers
Wenger goes to bed thinking one thing, and wakes up thinking another. Maybe his ramblings on his transfer policy are part of a cunning plan to confuse other clubs, at least he has confused his own fans, and almost certainly himself. His comment that he will not sign anyone until Theo has been signed is breathtakingly stupid. Yes it appears to make sense, after all who do you need to replace him? But what if Theo keeps this up to June like RvP, Cesc, Nasri etc?
He claims he will only sign quality players, so how does he explain Park, Chamakh and Squillaci? Meanwhile we the fans are demanding Messi, another red herring from Le Prof to discredit anyone who dares to think differently. I haven’t managed for an afternoon, but it seems obvious to me that only a fool would build a season round the possible return of Diaby. How someone who has managed as long as Wenger can’t see it is beyond me.
Weak and tired squad
Wenger’s squad already looks weak and tired, and the only major changes he can come up with is to play Ramsey and rest his Captain. Where are all these wonderful youth the academy is supposed to be producing? Oh I forgot they are, mostly, on loan, as their wages are far too high to get rid of them.
No other club is as daft as to pay such high wages to such underachievers. Meanwhile the more talented players seek to leave, and wouldn’t you? The ships are leaving the sinking rat.
Time for a boycott?
Over the last few years we have been forced to endure quite a few boring and eventually meaningless replays. This one could serve an actual useful purpose, to let the club know of our discontent with a manager who has lost his grip and is on the road to nowhere.
Can he be replaced? Of course he can, Guardiola is out there at the moment; if the club was to be decisive they could sign him. Any decent CEO would have a list of replacements at hand, though whether Gazidis is a decent CEO is debatable. After Rioch left who was expecting Wenger? After Billy Wright was sacked who expected Mee, and so it goes, a great club cannot be in thrall to one man. It’s time for a change.

still think that the boycott has to happen following one of those marches,
also padre you know there may be lots of disillusioned gooners but very few are united in their view of the cause and so very hard to get them to support a boycott if the said boycott is not in line with their views. You have made it clear you want Wenger and Gazidis gone, alot view one or the other as being the problem, very few see both, and Wenger still has massive loyalty from the fans,

Then can at least there can serious discussion of what it is that is wrong what needs to happen and what can be done to make that happen
I think then there should be a campaign of steady public pressure ahead of any boycott to try to get the needed changes not only to hopefully avoid a boycott of the Club we love which while it may be necessary at some point nobody really wants it to happen or have to happen.
This would also give those on the sidelines the opportunity to join the movement once they see there is a movement to join and that it is active and growing. Too often we all talk the talk on these things but wait for someone else or everyone else to walk the walk.
In addition the time before the boycott will not merely give the movment a much bigger hammer to wield but allow all of those in this effort to get the strength to if necessary take that more drastic and traumatic action if that time comes and to make that action that much larger and more impactful and successful.
Which planet do you live. How worst does it need to get before you see sense. Eight years without winning anything, the directors made a fortune, the ticket prices are among the most expensive in the world. We watch a mediocre team play every week a manager stuck in the past with an oversize ego. Do you truly believe we will anything this season? If you truly believe that then you have turned into a Gazidis clone.

This will be the foundation of whatever actions follow on and without this foundation we are just talking the talk for another year or two years or three years.

I also recall we came back from 1-0 down to get a draw against Southampton. Played poorly but didn't get beaten as we may have in previous seasons. Came back from 1-0 down to lead 2-1 today. In other seasons we would have lost 2-0 in both those games.
Kept getting pegged back by Newcastle but what happened? We scored 4 goals unanswered.
And using the 'last 8 years' as a bat to hit Wenger with is disingenuous at best Padre.
We are heading for a war between those supporters that want to act and those prepared to tolerate the dross.

Yes winning things stopped the man u boycott, but arsenal will not be winning things under this manager. it will happen, maybe not straight away but it will happen
Padre, the major difference I have with you is that you seem to be fixated on Wenger as the root of all evil at Arsenal whereas I see the board and Kronke as the major reason why Arsenal has not gone forward since moving from Highbury.
Are you going to tell me that Wenger is responsible for raising the ticket prices at the Emirates and selling our best players? No, that is an upper management decision. No owner would let a subordinate sell his most valuable assets, especially, to his main rivals.

Simon 68. Who are you really? I reckon Gazidis in disguise if not you must be a mole for the board. I am not sure how long you have been a supporter. I am not sure you know what it feels like to witness your team you have been supporting all your life lift a FA cup. I was at the game against Leicester when we became the invincible. This is a memory I will never forget for the rest of my life. I want to be able to experience the feeling of winning again, believe me it is great. What you also have to remember what Wenger and the arsenal board keep saying that finish 4th is what they are looking for and the other bit they do not say is to keep making money for themselves. You must a mug to buy this philosophy. The only way that we will return to winning ways is to get a new manager.
Simon's been around long enough to remember previous barren streaks. You're barking up the wrong tree there matey.
That makes this run completely different becuase it may be this barren could have been avoided largely or entirely but for at best a shameful lack of ambition at the time and at worst an even more shameful period were personal greed mattered more to the trusted with running the Club than football did.
What the feck good do you imagine that will do? Awake the coach to our deficiances? I've got news for yer, he knows it already. All such a move would do would be to deepen the lack of confidence of our team.
Calm down for feck's sake, go down to Dingle and breathe some real air then come fighting.
"A club is a union between players, supporters and directors". - Wenger.
Arsene wenger has done an absolutely masterful job within the constraints he has... Every single year, he has outperformed our spending every single year he has been manager. It is extraordinary. -Gazides.
You get strange unsubstantiated claims by some that only Wenger could have kept Arsenal in the CL every year. This is a spurious argument built on sentiment. Arsenal are one of the richest clubs in the league, they have a huge wage bill to prove it. There's no reason why we shouldn't be competing with Manu as they seem quite capable of competing with the oil teams and yet they are a club saddled with debt. So we have finished top four in all those trophyless years. That's the least we should expect, that is NOT an over achievement.
The difference is ambition and the sale of RVP simply made plain what the more perspicacious of us already knew.
And then you get ridiculous statements from Simon about how well we did holding on to leads against mighty Wigan and the mammoth beast that is Southampton. Now I think comparing results is another spurious argument but for the sake of it I will.
Couldn't hold on to a lead against Fulham. 2-0 loss at home to Swansea. Couldn't beat Sunderland at home. Lost at home to Chelsea. Couldn't beat Bradford. Couldn't beat Villa away. That's the Villa who Spuds beat 4-0 at Villa Park. The same Fulham side that lost 3-0 at home to Spuds. And Chelsea this weekend put five past Southampton with the help of Demba Ba, a player that Arsenal could easily afford and many fans would have been happy to see join us. A proven striker in the EPL for less money than Gervinho. And Wenger missed that bargain.
So he might have got injured but so might have RVP by now and yet all I see his him scoring goals every week.
And Wenger claims the fans want players like Messi to join us. No you French clown we had a player of world class quality and you sold him for peanuts, considering the job he's doing for Manu and the struggle we have in actually having a dependable striker.
Wenger uses any excuse to dither because it appears he can't admit he's bought mainly dross for the last three years. So it'll take a good healthy home beating by City to wake the clown up and then he'll go on a spending spree buying half a dozen so so players who may or may not grab the Holy Grail of fourth spot.
And the farce that is AFC continues ad infinitum. It's tedious.
And yes Wenger isn't the only problem. But he's the immediate problem.
There are reasons for our present barren-run and all of us have a go at trying to suss the reasons out. Some blame the owners, some blame the manager and some blame the players.
I, as you know, put most of the blame at the feet of our moving to Emirates. Of being broke, in essence.
You blame the Board for what you perceive as corporate robbery. But in the end, it does not matter F.A. as to what you and I perceive, or any one else for that matter.
The point is we are having a barren run. Like I, and possibly you, witnessed in the 60s, 70s and a lot of the 80s.
Most of the 90s and the 1st half of the 2000s were bloody great.
During the 70s and 80s the Scouses had most of it. And we were about the 2nd or 3rd best team in the land. I say this as a generalisation, but they were still barren runs. From a neutral perspective Arsenal fc were, at best, a `cup team`.
I remember ManU getting relegated in 74 and a couple of my buddies who were staunch ManU fans, one was born in the rats-nest, almost stopped supporting them in their 2div season.
They took Docherty to pieces over it, when, in hindsight, the influence of the core of their team had leaving the season before, was the real reason for their decline.
It`s a lot easier to blame an entity than it is to blame a concept or an influence. Fans need something physical to take aim at.
Anyway I`m rambling. What I`m suggesting is, the real reasons are many-fold and it`s groundhog day in the barren-days department, at present.
Since the end of WW1, 1919, when the FA restarted its 4 tier football league, with Arsenal fc in the 1st div, there’s only ever been one club to have never been relegated from Div 1/ EPL.

Phuck me! I just wasted three minutes of my life reading that garbage of an article by a bitter little man.
If you were to add up the time it takes to read every post you've ever written, considering they're seldom puncuated and never paragraphed, it would take the guts of two weeks to read the drivel you've posted. So what's three minutes?
Not that I agree with your assessment. While I disagree with the overall theme of the piece, Padre does raise very good points that can't be defended by even the most hardcore of Wenger loyalists.
Moyles gets half as much to spend on wages than Wenger - half as much, that is over achievment
"When we had to suffer the team is a lion because they suffer together." 4 July 2020 at Wolverhampton Wanderers
Arteta on his team's first away victory at a club above them in the Premiership since September 2015 at Leicester.
The team is close to it though.
They've spent vastly more money than us trying to get back what they regarded as theirs - 1st position.
They haven't come close in all that time yet still regard themselves as one of the biggest clubs not just in this country, but worldwide.
Yet they've failed, most often down there with the Tottenhams, Villas, Evertons etc as no-hopers, for 23 years.
All the money spent, the huge debts run up, all the players bought, all the 'world class managers', the 'messiahs' and yet, nothing.
And this season? Even further away than last season which is saying something.
And their new stadium which has been talked about for about a decade now is still a pipedream.
One of the 3 clubs in this country who can justly claim to be 'big', along with us and ManU, and look where they are.
Most of the headlines they've made over the past few seasons have been for the wrong reasons.
No-one has a divine right to success. Some years you get lucky, most years you don't.
Compared to them, and it is a good comparison, I feel Arsenal get a huge number of things right.
People are fond of talking about keeping things in perspective, but most people fail to do that.
So maybe it would also be too much to ask that people realised there are hugely important factors that go into category 'Outside Influences That Affect Arsenal FC' when it comes to explaining why we haven't won a trophy for 7 seasons (it's not 8 seasons or years until the end of the season, but hey, don't let little facts get in the way of making Wenger look even more useless than he obviously is). I won't go into them yet again as I reckon if you haven't read them by now or have ignored them because they don't suit your argument, then it's probably too late.
As for David Moyes. No trophies in nearly 11 years as Everton manager. One Cup Final.
Even McCleish has done better than that. Overachieving? Really?
This is the argument one uses when there is no other argument that will work and they know it.
The issue isn't whether we should win a trophy every year because there is no gurarntee of anyone getting up the next morning every day let alone your club winning some silverware every year.
The problem here is that the Club clearly and only a true propagandist and blind faith believer can deny this have not shown the same level of ambition and effort to try to compete to win silverware or reach the highest levels they competitively annually which is all any realistic supporter should expect from their club whomever it may be since I'll throw out number for comparison 1998-2005.
Add to that that for all their protestations of looking out for the Club and its long-term interests and not wanting to do any damage to Club that was their sole concern the board who ceased making this minimal effort pocketed 400 million pounds for themselves in 2011 which doesn't sound like any sort of long-term concern for the anything regarding the Club. And if this had happened the same way at any other club you'd agree that was the case.
No Simon I sense you don't even feel confident in the credibility of your defence of these individuals any longer really because as i say the words divine right reek of this debate back in 2007 or 2008 about the Club's direction going forward and should we support it.
All great team runs end and then start again, but not usually in these circumstanmces, not where we just sell off talent and refuse to invest in replacing it properly and that leads to our Custodians who insist they have no interest in moaking money for themselves are are long-term Gooners like ourselves for all practical intents and piurposes pocket 400 million pounds of money in the what can only be called very much the short term.
When was the last dry spell which saw the Custodians slash investment in the team and then make huge personal profits shortly thereafter? This is like when the Boston Red Sox owner sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees, so he could use the money to produce a broadway musical!
The Red Sox had won two World Series to the Yankees none at that time both with Ruth leading the way. Over the next 86 years the yankees won the Championship 26 times the Red Sox none And Babe Ruth played a huge role in their first three Championships and won their fourth with them as well.
See pocketing 400 million now for themselves won't necessarily benefit the Club long-term will it? And that is the drastic difference in this barren run. It almost certainly did not have to happen as it has given the personnel in place at the time except the the custodians trusted with advancing the Clb's ambitions becamse totally about advancing their own personal financial ambitions.

Stop sounding so desperate. You've got to change the record. It's not all about what you have on your agenda.
I don't have one and I don't post according to yours. I don't look to score points as I post as I see it, as anyone whose been on this site for a long time, as I have, will tell you.
If you failed to see what I thought was a fairly obvious point, I'm not going to bother explaining it to you.
In this case being right can lead to public action or reaction and positive change for that pressure.
But where you and some others and I really differ is you cannot conceive of the possibility you might even perhaps be wrong not because of ego I don't believe but because of the importance you place in your faith in the Club and those running it being justified. That does not allow for any other possibility but what you want to believe not because you are right and must be right but because your faith must be justified. My sense is your latest reversion to pre-2008 arguments suggests maybe your own faith is being shaken now
`Some of the clubs turn a profit`, you say, but forget the fact that they are all in deep debt.
What you discribe as rich clubs only have rich owners. Roman and the Oil Sheiks are rich, but Chelski and City are not rich. Their balance sheets prove my right on this.
I suspect that making out that Afc is rich fits nicely into your agenda against Wenger and the silly way you paint a picture of Wenger having all the money he`s needed to bring back his own glory days.
We are poor. We owe a quarter of a billion pounds to other organisations. Turning a profit does not mean you`re rich.

Of course they turn to the supporters ans act like we on the edge of bankruptcy if we increase any investment in the team now or any time soon.
So what is the truth? We do not know with absolute certainty yet although the evidence strongly suggests that in fact we do have plenty of money and are a rich club though we do have a long-term but easily managable debt given our financila profile that needs to be addressed annually and must keep that in mind moving forward.
The problem if in fact we are not as rich as they are saying is not simply that we are not as rich but this clearly raises the specter of far more serious and damaging issues that would not only put the Club['s reptation in serious jeopardy but its very survivakl because if there is a drastic differenc ebetween what they have been selling to inevstors and the Club's actual financial health we are not talking simply the decpetion of supporters anymore but actual conspiracy to commit stock and accounting fraud. We are talking Enron.
We have no reason to believe this is the case at this time but if in fact we are not rich as has been suggested in the Club'a annual reports and to the investors at the AGMs and in the Arsenal Board Room than the Board screwing the Club and its supporters in fact are the very least of our worries.
So let's hope they have in fact just betrayed our trust because as horrible and shameful and inexcusable as that is its not illegal at least.
We have plenty of money Weedz. 35 million to spend on players according to Gazidis. We'll ignore the 100 million in the bank as that seems to be contentious.
I would an organization should be formed now and discussions held to determine what we want to advocate and how we can do so. If things improve on their then we all are happy for the Club and have new drinking buddies. If not we are ready to act moving forward straight away.
I would suggest a strong petition this April or may as well as some sort of presence at the AGM petition this spring and other actions all with an eye of building the size and strength of the organization to begin plans for if needed the boycott of season ticket renewals in may 2014 if it comes to that.
I don't think an unorganized campaign will achieve much if anything this may, but an attempt at an organized boycott prematurely could backfire even more spectacularly and then the movement would lose that critical tool of negotiation before it could be used effectively.
If Wenger makes big buys in window (some chance) and team finishes third (most unlikely) then it would be whistling in the wind.

From what I`ve read, I believe Hippo, that the club must keep that 100m in reserve , as part of the contract, on our debt, with the banks.
I know we must keep a cash reserve, but I`m not too sure of the amount.
35m to spend on players? Well to buy a player of quality, one would imagine that a 15-25m pound outlay would be required for the transfer. 25 - 40m for a top-line striker/AMF, who`d have sell-on value.
And anywhere between 8 -15m in wages for the contract. So maybe you should take the `s` off the end of `players`.
Also, with our club having such a strict wage structure, bringing in a high wage earner would result in a massive headache.

I wnt to be careful here because our history does suggest success in the future as no club has celebrated success in as many different decased as Arsenal.
Having said that I am sure you don't believe spending more money6 now guarantees any additional success now, so how can you guarantee success in the future simply because there has been success in the past? That is just disingenuous and hypocritical really and look no further than the Seven Sisters Road to see people still believing that mantra and still waiting for it to happen 50 years on.
If success is not guaranteed now it is never guaranteed and to suggest otherwise is dishoinest really even in spite of past history.

Mallyx what exactly can our Club's long-term aim be when the people who initiated this long-term vision took 400 million pounds for themselves in the very short term and aren't even guiding us long-term now?
We probably need at least three more signings if we want to win anything but Fellaini might be enough to secure us fourth.
