Arsenal seemed hung over after the Community Shield and found Palace far harder to break down than Citeh last week. There were few great performances, and if there were any they were in defence, not the stuttering midfield. But players like Sanchez, Carzorla, Ramsey and Giroud did enough from dead ball situations to scrape a win. Thanks to Palace's time wasting there was enough extra time to get the winner. Wilshere continued to look for his lost contact lens on the pitch and when Ozil returns might find it hard to get a place. Eduardo's ratings follow.

Szczesny 6 - little to do, not at fault for their goal

Debuchy 7 - our best player
Chambers 7 - composed performance
Koscielny 7 - poor on their goal, but got our first goal
Gibbs 6 - ok, but went off injured

Arteta 6 - ok, nothing more
Wilshere 5 - poor, too slow in his passing
Ramsey 6 - poor, but got our winner

Alexis 6 - in and out game, his passing was off
Sanogo 4 - poor game
Cazorla 5 - poor, passing was woeful at times

Monreal 7 - looked sharp
Giroud 5 - better than Sanogo
Oxlade-Chamberlain 5 - poor passing, but improved us
