Pointless Arsenal Player Ratings v WBA

I might be being generous with some of those ratings. We needed a big response after the Tottenham horror show and it couldn't have gone any worse if we'd tried. We were horrific throughout. We looked weak and shot of confidence, and gave away too many fouls. Conceded two awful goals as well. Back to the good old days of lots and lots and lots of possession and inconsequential sideways passes (return of the Crab. Ed), but it all led to nothing in the end. Lack of penetration out wide or through the middle. Too easy to defend against. All of that being said, we had enough chances to win the game 3-2. Campbell missed a sitter and Cazorla skied a penalty.
A few things to mention. First is Wenger's transfer policy. The fact that we're still using players like Arteta, Flamini and Joel Campbell is not good enough, plus having to use a left back on the left wing is poor. I can't believe some people on this forum tried to defend Wenger's decision not to bring in any outfield players. Second is our continued faith in injury prone players. The likes of Walcott, Welbeck, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ramsey and Wilshere could've changed the game today because they're good, effective, dynamic players, but alas they're all out injured, as seems to be the case most of the time. We can't expect to do well if we keep having 8 - 10 players out injured. Another point, I struggle to see the point in playing Giroud upfront if we're going to delay putting in the cross so much, and when we do put a cross in they're generally poor and easy to defend. Right at the end though, Monreal did manage to get a good ball into the box and nobody was anywhere near it.

Ratings:
Cech - 6. Couldn't have done anything for the two goals, otherwise had nothing to do.
Bellerin - 5. Horrific first half where McClean had him on toast and he was caught the wrong side of his man on a couple of occasions. I'll let him off if he is a bit rusty though. Better second half.
Mertesacker - 6. Okay but some shaky/ indecisive moments.
Koscielny - 6. Ditto Mertesacker.
Monreal - 6. Okay. Good ball in at the end but no one was anywhere near it.
Coquelin - 5. Didn't have the best of starts before going off injured early.
Cazorla - 5. Passed it around to little avail. Should've had an assist though, but Campbell missed a sitter. Awful, awful penalty miss.
Alexis - 6. Better than in recent weeks, and looked the most like creating something, but still not at his best.
Ozil - 6. Great ball in for Giroud's goal. A couple of really good through passes but unfortunately not enough.
Gibbs - 6. Did nothing wrong, but not a winger.
Giroud - 5. Scored the opener but spent most of the first half scrapping with West Brom players. Completely anonymous in the second half.
Subs:
Arteta - 4. Conceded the free kick for the first, scored an OG for the second, went off injured. Did manage a few successful passes in that time though.

Arteta should be a ZERO for basically giving the game to WBA. Wenger should also be given a ZERO for bringing on Arteta for Coq when Flamini would be a better option though in truth, both are far from good options.....

Mert was intensely bad, as was Arteta. It is unfair to rate Bellerin lower even though he had some tough moments defensively because he had to carry so much of our offense. Similarly, masters of the obvious downgrade Campbell for missing the sitter but he actually opened things up for us. He didn't play badly at all. He should have been in the starting 11.

Masters of the obvious will have also noted the ball only made it through to him for his glaring miss because a West Brom player fell over, hardly cutting them up with intelligent of the ball movement.

Cech could have done a lot about the 2nd, that ball shouldn't have gone past him, Arteta had no chance tbh.

My advice to Arteta would be don't move your hand towards the ball when it is coming past you.

You pick out fringe moments that had nothing to do with the result. Whatever.
