Nervy Arsenal Triumph Player Ratings v Man U (version 2)

By Gunnersingh
April 23 2022

A huge win and top 4 is still on.  Very nervy game but there will be plenty more between now and the end of the season.

Ramsdale 4 - Nervous and tried to be to clever.  For one moment I thought he was going to thump Ferenandes after his pen miss.  Needs to calm down.

Cedric 4- Lucky not to concede a pen, and was poor. Now Tomi is back doubt he'll be starting again.

White 6-Improved but dwelled too much in the ball.

Gabriel 7 - Poor mistake for their goal, other wise was solid.

Tavares 3 - Shocking performance.  Has ability but his concentration levels are poor.  Gets a extra point for the goal.

Xhaka 9- Brilliant performance.  MOTM.  Leader and was a calming influence on the ball.  Great goal.

Elneny 5 - These kind of games he's not good enough.  caused us trouble by passing backwards and sidewards.

Saka 8 -  Telles couldn't handle him and he stepped up again for the pen.  Hopefully his injury isn't bad.

Odegaard 8 - Moved the ball well and caused them trouble by getting between the lines. Great pass to Saka for the pen

Smith-Rowe 4 - Game passed him by.  Doesn't have pace to take on full backs so he cuts in and is predictable.  Needs to improve his fitness as he was blowing out of his a ss!

Nketiah 5- Should have scored but hit it straight at their goalkeeper.

Holding 5 - Not really tested

Martinelli 5 - Couldn't get involved.

Tomi NA.  But great to see him back.

Cedric 5 - improved as the game went on but several iffy moments

Gabriel 7 - Extra point for the Fernandes tackle in the first half
Tavares 4 - literally no idea what to rate him. Good bits and bad bits
Xhaka 8 MOTM - Great game, wonderful strike
Elneny 7 - Pyramid Pirlo drops another decent performance
ร˜degaard 7 - Some great moments in the first half particularly
Saka 7 - Instrumental in the first two goals
ESR 5 - A very quiet game
Nketiah 6 - Worked hard. Shouldโ€™ve scored, did score but disallowed

Subs

Very much agree with the above but would prob give Nketiah a 7 for his link up play. Also thought Varane really struggled against him. Also Odegaard an 8 and MOTM for me.

Ramsdale 6 - He looks nervous. Good tip onto the post
Cedric 4 - Probably his poorest game. Lucky not to have given a penalty away.
White 6 - Dwelling on the ball. Not his best game.
Gabriel 7 - As Flava says, extra point for that great tackle on Fernandes.

Tavares 3 - And that's with scoring. Gave penalty away and not sure he knows what he's doing.

Xhaka 7 - Good 2nd half. Great goal. And another stupid Xhaka yellow that could have cost us.

Elneny 7 - Very good game today. He likes playing United.
ร˜degaard 7 - I must be missing something ๐Ÿค” oh he did make the best C/Back look a fool with a dummy.
Saka 8 - MOTM again. So cool for the penalty.

ESR 5 - Struggled to get into the game.

Nketiah 6 - He's cover and that's it.

I am concerned by the recent form of Martinelli. He seemed to have gone off the boil in the last few games. Hopefully he picks up his form again very soon during the last crucial games.

What a wonder goal by Xhaka, and I thought Elneny had a great game in the second half.
At the end of the match most of the crowd stayed on, the North Bank didnt leave for ages.
The fave song was Weve got Super Mik Arteta blah blah going into the Champios League. Probably a bit previous but crowd has been uplifted by two great results, and some great goals.
At this time of the season its the points that count, as one manager once said if you want entertainment go to the Circus, although it felt a bit like one at time. Not sure my ticker can take much more

I am waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Losses against Leeds, Newcastle and Everton? grinning smiley

What "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" team.
We got away with murder, the way Ramsdale, Cedric and Tavares gifted them with those misplaced passes.
That penalty miss was a turning point.

Put it this way.
Cometh the houreth, cometh the Man.
Both Xhaka and Elneny stand tall when called upon to step into the breach.

I would say that for the next 5 games, both Xhaka and Elneny are vital to our drive for 4th spot.
Let's hope we had sealed 4th spot before playing against Tiny Totts; and before Xhaka is suspended (again).

Lucky Lucky Arsenal.

Elneny should have at least a 7 for this game. He kept possession for us very well and did not put in a wrong foot the whole game. His calmness in possession allow us to break some of the press from ManU in the middle of the park. Seeing Arteta giving him a hug and speaking with Elneny for a whole minute tells me how much Arteta must have appreciated his contribution. In some forums, he is being touted as MOTM. Dont forget we are in Ramadan period meaning Elneny is very likely to be fasting as well.

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal's unity is making him believe they can win the race for the top four.

Arsenal effectively knocked Manchester United out of Champions League contention, with a stirring win at the Emirates and leaving the battle for the final place looking like a shootout between them and their north London rivals Tottenham.

Arsenal had to survive some difficult moments against United before Granit Xhaka's second-half strike, following first-half efforts from Nuno Tavares and Bukayo Saka and Cristiano Ronaldo's goal for United, sealed all three points.

Mikel Arteta said the unity in his Arsenal squad could propel them to the Champions League

Arteta said: 'What I see is a team that is so willing, that gives the energy. The cohesion that they have in that stadium is phenomenal and it gives them a chance and it makes me believe we can do it.'

Arteta admitted that on chances 'we don't deserve to win' but Arsenal got the job done to remain in the Champions League hunt.

He said: 'My belief is that we are going to give it a real go, we can win football matches but the margins are going to be really small and we have to be very aware of that.

'Winning and losing in this league and where we are today is defined by the small margins and we have to take the game where we want to win in the 95 minutes.'

Next month's North London derby looks like it will be increasingly pivotal. Arteta said: 'It could be a crucial game. Let's see what happens before that, where both teams are. But of course, that head to head game is going to be really important.

'This is why we are here. To play big matches that can define big moments. That's the beauty of this game.'

Nicely said.
It is the fighting spirit and togetherness of the entire squad, staff and club that will give a booster charge to the Fight for Top-4.

When those youngsters and benchwarmers are united together as a team, we will get Top-4.
Just look at the likes of Holding, Elneny, Nketiah and Cedric stepping into the breach and battle fiercely for the badge.

Cedric?
For all his ups and downs, overall, he did a decent job in replacing Tomi.

Nketiah?
Bad body language and disinterest when coming in as sub previously.
But somewhat, he got his head screwed right and shine for the last 2 games ... and may he continue his scoring run ... a goal every other game?

Lucky Lucky Arsenal!

Wonder what happened if Mike Dean is the ref?

#1 - Penalty for that Cedric hand-ball on the floor when replay shown his arm swept the ball?

#2 - Penalty against Tavares for "tripping" Elanga behind (before his daft hand ball)?

#3 - Best of all. Nketiah was clearly off side and directly in De Gea eye of sight. Discussions on media whether it should or should not given.

Oh well, what goes around comes around.
It compensated for that goal against Brighton by Martinelli which might turned the tide against Brighton.

Eventually, after an entire season, all good and bad decisions balanced each other out.
Karma.

Plus, it removed the bad taste in the mouth of losing at OT when we should have won that game.

In the Man Utd Ratings

Anthony Elanga

Wasted a one-on-one with a tame hit at Aaron Ramsdale and had the good fortune of playing against the terrible Tavares, but should have offered more. 5

Glad he scored as he's had a rough first season but I wonder what we do with Tavares long term?

He has great athleticism and skill on the ball but don't know what goes through his head sometimes.

Will be a big test of Arteta's coaching but I think his good points make him worth persevering with.

Two massive wins in a row.

The Red Devils fell to a second defeat this week when they were put to the sword by Arsenal, which was a damaging blow to their hopes of finishing in the top four this season, although they only have themselves to blame after squandering a great chance from the spot to level things up in the second half.

While Man United were handed one penalty, which was missed by Bruno Fernandes, they may feel extremely hard done by to have not been awarded one earlier in the match, but across the balance of play, the Red Devils didnโ€™t deserve the three points managing just five shots on target and needed David de Gea to pull off six impressive saves.

No matter how poorly they played, it appears quite clear that they shouldโ€™ve had another penalty as Richard Keys has pointed out that Cedric clearly handled the ball and scooped it away from the feet of Jadon Sancho who was breaking into the box, with neither Craig Pawson nor the VAR team feeling it deserved a spot-kick.

While a lot of handballs can be up for debate and subject to opinion based on where the arm is and if itโ€™s outstretched and away from the body, however, this one appeared to be clear cut and a nailed-on penalty as Cedric literally just scooped the ball away from Sancho, who would have had a clear run into the box.

The game was finely poised when this incident happened with the Gunners leading 2-1 in the first half itโ€™s too obvious to look back and think that it wasnโ€™t potentially game-changing and with Man United going on to lose the match and ultimately saying goodbye to their top-four chances, it could well be seen as a season-defining moment that could haunt fans for time to come.
