Havertz Arteta’s Raumdeuter? Mullering it over

By Merlion
January 19 2024

In an interview in 2011, Thomas Muller was asked to describe himself as a player, Müller coined the term “Raumdeuter”. – “space interpreter”. Muller takes advantage of his superb understanding of tactics, positioning and his instinct for where space and chances will appear and his work rate are remarkable. That was his greatest talent; the ability to see and move into spaces nobody else has noticed at the right time.

He possesses no outstanding physical qualities; he is not known for his speed, dribbling, strength or startling finishing ability. His headers are unexceptional and so is his shooting ability with both feet, not the cleanest striker of the ball. He pressed but often lost sight of his objective.

Muller was the antithesis of the kind of player Pep was looking for when he arrived at Bayern. He’s not technical gifted and he lost more balls than any Bayern players during Pep Guardiola Era. Pep tried to convert him into an attacking midfielder but quickly had to admit defeat. And yet he has the extraordinary knack scoring goals, and admired for his boundless energy and unstinting commitment to the team.

Pep then modified his tactics with Muller as the deep-lying striker playing behind Lewandolski. A no. 9 that draws defenders away and leaving Muller to exploit those spaces and a vital linkup man to superb dribblers like Ribery and Robben attacking from the flank.

When Arteta bought Kai Havertz, he was thinking of a new tactics utilizing Havertz as a “raumdeuter”, that vital linkup man behind the striker, who find spaces in a low block situation and that vital linkup man between attacking Forward-3 and Midfield-3.

Havertz has a very unique role within the ArtetaBall 4.0 system, sacrificing his defensive responsibilities (Xhaka’s responsibility) for playmaking in the final third. Unfortunately, due to the current lack of communication and synergy between players, Havertz does not have the number of assists and key passes in Arsenal games, that the lethal impact that Müller had. Havertz has yet to utilise his freedom to roam across the pitch to full effect, which is the role of Martin Odegaard. For Kai Havertz to be as successful as Thomas Müller at Bayern, Mikel Arteta must be able to coach Havertz for the main features of his role.

The first of which is most important for him to get information on the pitch:Scanning. For a Raumdeuter, awareness plays a huge part, with it being the only way to find the spaces on the pitch to determine the best positions to occupy. For Müller to be able to find and recognise where the spaces are on the pitch, he must make sure that he has a clear picture of the pitch whenever he receives the ball or moves around the pitch.

Scanning to be able to anticipate the next few passes. Müller is constantly swivelling his head to notice where the vacant spaces are on the pitch which allows Müller to decide where to position himself depending on the position of the ball and the players around him.

In and around the box, Müller thrives from his impeccable scanning. Because of the limited space in the penalty area being able to find a yard of space can be the difference between a shot getting blocked and it hitting the back of the net.

 Positioning

The biggest issue for an attacking midfielder situated in the wide channel (open space at opposite flank where ball is in play) is the lack of creative spark close to the goal, and it is limited to one side of the pitch. To combat this issue, Müller utilises the half-spaces, finding larger pockets of space in this area between the opposition.

 Half-spaces

Operating in the half-spaces is where Müller does most of his work to break down a defence. This is where he can slip in between the opposition shape most easily.

Defending a player of Müller’s quality in the half-space is very challenging with him situating between the full-back and centre-half, finding himself unmarked frequently during a match.

Müller’s excellence comes from his ability to maximise the gaps in the opposition shape, as he punishes defenders focusing on the ball to slip into free spaces.

 Anticipation & Goal Scoring

Muller is superb in making runs into space to receive the ball is an obvious way for him to score. Without the ball, Müller intelligently made a run towards the open space in the half-space, in the opposite direction to where the ball was travelling. When a simple through ball arrived, Müller found himself free with the ball on the edge of the box.

 Summary

Thomas Müller is truly a one-of-a-kind player, possessing the goalscoring ability of a striker and the creative spark of a midfielder. Pulling both of those skill sets together is what has created this role as a ‘Space interpreter’, something unique in football. Thomas Müller has taken football intelligence, awareness and movement to a new level in elite football.

When Mikel Arteta bought Kai Havertz, surely, he saw another ‘Space interpreter’ in Kai Havertz. But has Mikel the ability of Pep to transform Kai Havertz into a deep-lying striker cum playmaker?

Then, if ArtetaBall 4.0 is successful implemented, the KPI for league goals scored are:

45 goals by Saka, Martinelli and Odegaard;

15 goals by Jesus and Nketiah;

15 goals by Havertz, Trossard, Nelson, ESR, Vieira, Rice;

10 goals by Jorginho, Partey, defenders and own goals.

Havertz will never be anything like a Müller.

Havertz is no more than an average player who we paid way over the top for.
Way out of his depth in the Premier League.
It was another big Arteta mistake getting him.

He fouls.
He's too slow on and off the ball.
His passing is terrible at times.
Got a shot like a 6-year-old.

The only place I see for Havertz is up front. He's actually useful there. He's not useful anywhere in the midfield.

Havertz, who sees his contract at the Emirates Stadium expire in 2028, has featured 19 times for the Gunners in the Premier League this season, scoring just four goals and providing a single assist. Seeing as his market value has already fallen to £47.2million in just six months, according to Transfermarkt, Arteta should offer him to Bayern.

Luckily for Arsenal, Tuchel seems like a big fan of Havertz making the deal perfect for either side. In an interview with Glenn Hoddle back in 2021, the former Blues boss praised the German's versatility and compared him to Dennis Bergkamp.

When asked if he sees Havertz as a conventional number nine, Tuchel said: "I’m still not sure. I see a bit of Dennis Bergkamp, Robin Van Persie, [Dimitar] Berbatov kind of player.

"He can play in the half position because he has good runs, but also feels free from the nine and creates overload to one side. When I watched him at Leverkusen, I didn’t know that I would coach him.

"Havertz has yet to utilise his freedom to roam across the pitch to full effect, which is the role of Martin Odegaard."

And that's the problem. There's no point having both Odegaard and Havertz in the same midfield.

“You look at all the data and it is Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal at the top, at the top, at the top,” Arteta said. “The reality is that we haven’t won enough matches. There is something underneath that: it is like an onion, the first layer, second layer … we have to go to the bottom of it to understand actually what is making us win or lose.

“It is the small details, the margins, and then the boxes have played a big part of that. We have to change that. As a coach, you think: ‘Yeah, do that and that’s what will happen …’ It’s not. We have to find something else to win.”

Yup.
The last 3 breakaway goals are exactly what it meant by running into "wide channel".

Arteta has yet to get the balance right with Odegaard and Havertz occurring the same space and running into each other.

When Saka cut into centre, spaces are congested with Jesus, Odegaard and Saka occupying the same patch with no triangle for the quick passes into open channel.

Then, sheer waste of money to buy Havertz without knowing the tactical formation to meld Raumdeuter with the Forward-3 and telepathic understanding with Odegaard or the very least understand each other movement in the final third.

Havertz has continued to have his doubters at Arsenal. The Germany international has not exactly built upon his impressive run of form from late November.

Kai Havertz impressed for Arsenal in Liverpool win
But his best performances for Arsenal have arguably come when the 24-year-old has been up front. He was excellent in the first-half of the Community Shield against Manchester City. And he is most definitely a handful for defenders.

Ibrahima Konate picked up two yellow cards after two clashes with Havertz. And Havertz worked incredibly hard for the Gunners.

He did miss a glorious chance which Bukayo Saka would then score from. But speaking on Handbrake Off, former Arsenal man Adrian Clarke suggested that he was hugely impressed by the forward’s display.

“I really liked it, I really, really liked it. I felt like the formation was pretty much 4-4-2 with two withdrawn strikers. That may be might the formula moving forwards, whether it’s Jorginho and Rice or Partey and Rice, that that’s a strong enough midfield two to go with two forwards that also chip in defensively. That’s our big game formula, it feels like,” he said.

“Whether it’s Havertz or Jesus, they can both work the front line. What I really like about Havertz is his movement. He’s a very intelligent player and he gets into positions and makes runs that are hard for defenders. You just wish that when he gets on the end of those runs, he’s a little bit more assertive and brilliant. But I thought that the way that he stood on Konate and basically ruined Konate’s afternoon was great to watch.

“I haven’t rewatched the whole match back yet. I’ve watched the first half hour, and he basically just stands on Konate or in and around him, and just gives him hell. And I love to see it. Top performance from him.

“I don’t think it’s debatable actually. I think his best position for the Arsenal is there. It is there.”

Gunners fans rewarded for backing summer signing
Havertz has not been good enough in front of goal since his arrival. However, he has still managed to score as many goals in the Premier League as Gabriel Jesus this season.

The big transfer fee did him no favours, particularly as Chelsea also spent a significant sum on him. But obviously, he has absolutely no say in the transfer fees which take him from club to club.

The Arsenal fans have backed Havertz. And they have been rewarded. While he has been anonymous in some games, he has also come up with some big moments since his move.

[tbrfootball.com]

Most people forgot that he was Bayerkusen Wunkerkind when he played as the withdrawn striker and developed a telegraphic understanding with the then brilliant Julian Brandt.

He struggled to play as Chelski Lone Striker simply there is no "Julian Brandt" as a partner-in-crime.

But with Jesus, Saka, Martinelli and Odegaard, Havertz needs time to master intricate ArtetaBall, and to develop understanding with his team-mates. Like Pries, he may take as long as a season to do that.
Even Bergy and Henry took about 6 months to groove into the team.

Like all those pundits said, his key attributes are to create spaces for his fellow forwards and midfielders, and to occupy defenders and pulled them out of shape to allow his team-mates to attack those vacated spaces.

Withdrawn striker cum midfielder is Havertz best role and up to Arteta to make use of those attributes as a "space hunter" to create shooting chances for his teammates.
Havertz may not be the most clinical striker but as long as he is creating shooting chances and spaces for fellow attackers, then he is a most valuable forward player.

And yes, Havertz is physical and has no qualm to use his knees, elbows and body to takeout opponents.

It's the common problem around here, people make a prejudgment of a player and then stick to it come hell or high water.

I'm not saying Havertz has done enough to warrant changing negative perceptions as yet, but equally he hadn't done anything to warrant them in the first place either.

So it doesn't matter what he does, minds are and were unfortunately already made up before he even kicked a ball for us.

I just don't understand that mentality. For pretty much his entire Chelsea tenure they just threw him up front to play as a #9 because they didn't have anyone else. So they/you have made your judgment solely based on him being played out of position in a struggling team; albeit for such a s.hit player, still managing to score the winner in a CL final in the process.

So based on that we won't even give him a chance despite there being numerous positives to counter any prejudged negatives in his game. We'll ignore the fact he is fantastic at holding the ball up, gives us different options in a few positions, was excellent playing as the false 9 against Liverpool Sunday in a game where our only other option would have been Nketiah and could have meant a different result.

But 5 mins into the next game, we'll just go back to hammering him regardless.

Arsenal’s victory against Liverpool yesterdauy showcased a departure from traditional striking partnerships, with Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz at the forefront of an unconventional approach, and with Arteta having informed us that Gabriel Jesus was out with an injury, it appears that the Boss had a new strategy to outwit Jurgen Klopp.

The strategy involved exploiting space rather than challenging for headers, confounding Liverpool’s center-backs and ultimately leading to Bukayo Saka’s crucial opening goal.

The brilliance of this approach lies in its deviation from the norm. Odegaard and Havertz, an unconventional duo, orchestrated a play that emphasized movement and spatial awareness over conventional goal-scoring methods. In doing so, they created an environment that allowed Havertz to capitalize on his free-spirited style, providing a platform for him to roam and disrupt opposition defenses.

While Havertz’s finishing may be a point of contention, the strategy compensates for this by prioritizing a dynamic system over a reliance on a single prolific striker. Havertz’s unpredictability and creativity become assets in a framework that values disruption and fluidity over a rigid, traditional role.

Critics argue that a natural goal scorer might have secured a more emphatic victory, scoring four or five goals. However, Arsenal’s willingness to forego a clinical finisher for a system that maximizes the team’s collective strengths challenges the conventional football narrative. The trade-off becomes evident – sacrificing a traditional striker for a strategy that disrupts defenses and leverages the diverse talents within the team.

In a football landscape often dominated by traditional strike partnerships, Arsenal’s embrace of innovation deserves recognition. The Gunners demonstrate that success doesn’t solely rely on a top striker but can be achieved through a system tailored to the team’s unique strengths. As long as Arsenal continues to defy expectations and secure victories, their unconventional striking approach may well serve as a blueprint for success in modern football.

And hopefully it could disrupt our rival’s tactics and ultimately deliver Arteta’s first League title this season.

Reinforced my view that Arteta knew what he is doing with Havertz.
He knew his Trio - Martinelli, Saka & Odegaard (44 league goals last season) - can scored from the spaces created by Havertz's movements and mobility.

Time for the Trio to double up.

Will Arteta utilise this formation away at West Ham? Worth a try if Jesus is still not fully fit.

What's been going on in this thread?
We know what he is by now and what he brings. The same performance in the Community Shield he gave us against Liverpool. Good hold up play poor finishing. Useful as a Giroud type plan B striker, useless as a midfielder.
Anyone that disagrees with what I said should not be calling for a striker or midfielder in the summer for the position you think he plays.

I agree. With him in midfield it's like having 10.5 players on the pitch. His game is very limited when in midfield. But when he's played up front, he drops into midfield (our first goal against iverpool), drags defenders out of position, and makes decent runs. It actually helps make us little less predictable.

The only way Havertz would work in midfield is if we had a strong duo that dominates the midfield (like Rice & Partey), with Havertz playing closer to the striker.

Arsenal fans have a chant that sums up the dramatic turnaround in fortunes enjoyed by Kai Havertz since he joined the North London club last summer. Indeed, the line “£60m down the drain, Kai Havertz scores again” can be heard ringing around the Emirates Stadium during most home matches the Gunners play at the moment.

Havertz scored one and assisted another for Arsenal in their 4-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday and has proved himself as an important member of Mikel Arteta’s team. The Gunners boss has certainly managed to get more out of Havertz than anyone at Chelsea was able to. Havertz is finally fulfilling his potential.

At Stamford Bridge, Havertz never found a position that suited him. Under Arteta at Arsenal, though, he has been harnessed in a free role which allows him to pose an attacking threat through late runs into the opposition penalty box. Against Newcastle, Havertz was deployed as a central attacker.

Initially, Arteta experimented with using Havertz as a midfield controller, but the German lacks the first touch and passing range to truly flourish in this role. Instead, Havertz is now seen as an auxiliary attacker who makes up for Arsenal’s lack of a true goalscoring centre forward in the mould of someone like Erling Haaland.

When Gabriel Jesus or Leandro Trossard play through the middle, they vacate space in the penalty box and drag opposition defenders with them. This is where Havertz and his attacking instincts have been really important for Arsenal in recent weeks with Arteta doing more and more to build around the 24-year-old.

Last season, Arsenal faded towards the end of the Premier League title race as Manchester City ultimately got their hands on the trophy once more. This season, Liverpool are setting the pace at the top of the standings, but the Gunners appear stronger. Havertz is a part of this with Arteta now available to call on more options.

Good recruitment has been key to Arsenal’s recent turnaround. It’s not just Havertz who has quickly found his feet at the Emirates Stadium - Trossard is another signing who has added quality to the Gunners’ squad. Declan Rice has also become a key pillar of the Arsenal team since joining last summer.

£60m was a lot to play for Havertz, but that money bought Arsenal a versatile shape-shifter who is growing in influence with almost every match he plays. If the Gunners are to end their long wait for a Premier League title this season, Havertz will have played an important role. He has already made the difference in a number of ways.

It took Kai 6 months to establish communication with Forward-Line and Midfield.
Like Muller, he is never a playmaker with silken skill, vision and superb passing skills like Odegaard.

He functions best as a "half-forward" rotating with versatile Trossard from centre to left flank and dropping deep to move into spaces vacated by defenders drawn away by movements of Martinelli, Trossard or Jesus.

From his early season struggles, Kai is improving, understanding the movements and preferences of his team-mates, plus Arteta gave a few tweaks to his tactical formation to accommodate Kai. Perhaps, it is that Dubai winter break that gave Arteta time to fine-tuned his tactics to integrate Kai, Rice and Trossard into the team.

Pity that Martinelli is on a prolonged slump.
When Martinelli is back on song, Kai will florish more wtih those gaps rendered in opposiiton box and Martinelli in full flight, dragging away 2 or 3 defenders, and plenty of space for Kai to move into them as Raumdueter.

Now then, like Arsene Wenger coached Aaron Ramsey that he needed a split second to steady himself and be composed, and not to hurry his shot immediately, then Arteta should coach Kai similarly to be more composed on the ball and find that split-second to compose himself before firing away.

And when the likes of Rice, Jorginho, Kiwior, Martinelli, Trossard, Jesus and Saka are more in-tune with the movements of Kai into the box and space vacated by opposition, ready to receive one-two immediately, then the entire team will be in full flight and scoring goals for fun. That is Arteta's Vision when he plonked 65-mil for Kai Havertz, a gamble which is starting to payoff now.

I remember going at Chelsea fans saying Ederson helped him score the CL final goal, he would have missed if the goal keeper never came out. Since then for Arsenal ive seen him in a one on one vs Liverpool and a one on one vs Newcastle and he didn't do well those times either.
Up front is definitely his position, I have not liked any of his midfield starts and he has always done well up top. We have to accept he won't be a ice cold finisher but will push us to get chances.

Midfield he's poor.
Upfront he does better but he misses chances and some are easy chances..
He's a shot like a powder puff.
He's got legs like a clumsy Giraffe.

Is that seriously someone we need upfront ?
I don't think so.

When we have no one else other than Nketiah, yes it most certainly is.

He scored a very important goal at the weekend, but instead of being positive about that and what he does offer the team, we're going to highlight he doesn't finish every chance, can't shoot properly, has giraffe legs etc. Have a day off mate, we won impressively again and other than the Porto game, have looked great the last month or so. Enjoy it.

But they won't though will they.

If Kiwior decides he wants regular football, he may want to go but we certainly won't be pushing him out the door because whether you like it or not, he's a very good 4th choice CB or LB. What 'better' player do you expect to be happy playing that role out of interest?

As for Havertz, there's no way he's leaving. You don't spend £60m on a player as a short term option until you 'sort your squad out'. Again whether you care to admit it, he is a big part of the squad and Arteta's plans and overall is doing very well for his first season with us.

We bought Pepe.

Right I'm done on this.
Just remember I told you so.
I said Pepe was cr ap from the start and he wouldn't last.

Havertz will be moved on unless he wants to bleed us like Ozil..
.
Kiwior will move on.
He'll only make the bench when all fit.
His International career will be over unless he's playing.

The reputable journalist feels that Arteta is playing to the German's strengths by refusing to consider him for a solitary role in the starting line-up, while it would backfire if he is described by the former Manchester City assistant manager as a frontman as it would lead to negativity from supporters and pundits.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT:

“I think it's important not to even call Havertz a striker because the more we label him, the more difficult it becomes for him and everybody else to actually analyse him.
The Spanish tactician has described the former Bayer Leverkusen talisman as 'exceptional' and admitted that he was pinpointed as a transfer target due to being able to find ways to break through sides who defend with a low block as they aim to keep Arsenal at bay.
...

“He is just a player that can't be pigeonholed, and I think that is probably his biggest strength. He is not a No.9, and we don’t know if he is a No.10 or No.8, but we do know that there is a role he is playing at Arsenal that is extremely effective right now.

“Mikel Arteta probably doesn't want to give him a specific named role because it could bounce back. If Arteta were to say ‘he is my striker’, you would start to analyse the amount of goals he has scored and say ‘if he is your striker, it's not good enough’.”

Like Muller then, it was hard to pin-point his role at Bayern Munich.

Arteta took a punt on the versatility of Havertz to fit into his new setup then.

Dividends are starting to pay but in the long term till end of season?
Jury is still out but signs are good.

I took ya! (Sm128)

Now, onwards to emulate Muller as a deadly predator that can score goals from everywhere in the box.

It is frightening that Kai Havertz, now playing with confidence, still has yet to fulfil his potential as Leverkusen Wunderkind when he first burst into Bundesliga.

Kudos to Arteta from spotting his potential and tweaked his positional plays.

I'm sure Havertz starts against Bayern.

Actually, Muller would be kinda useless as a false 9, if you think about it.

Havertz is Arteta’s Raumdeuter, albeit he needs to up his game and score as efficiently as Thomas Muller.

May Havertz confidence be so sky high thereafter and scoring regularly like at least a goal at every other game.

He could had folded after that disastrous miss but came back and scored from a tighter angle that the first open goal chance.

This ,for me is a pretty good summation.
I was never his greatest fan at Chelsea, nor overjoyed at his arrival here. However his contributions have been significant and there are aspects to his game that are both telling and desperately needed.
He is not though a natural finisher of chances, in tight games it's as much the ones you miss as the ones you score and ,boy, can Kai miss them.
First team player ? Currently yes .(Form and attitude)
First team striker ? Not if we can find better at the job - and there are better.

Like Lewandoski-Muller pairing at Pep Bayern Munich?

Or next season, Arteta will need to reshape the team with Nwaneri, Saka, Martinelli, Havertz, Odegaard, Rice (will Zubmendi come?), like Pep Barca Forward-Line of Villa-Messi-Pedro-Iniesta-Xavi with Busquets as DCM?

Most interesting to see next season whether it will be Nwaneri or Saka given a free role to roam across the line like Messi should Arteta decided to emulate Pep Barca instead of Pep Bayern Munich with a proven striker in Lewandoski.

Thomas Muller has Lewandolski in front of him.
Who was playing in front of Havertz - Trossard? Martinelli? Nwaneri?

Notice those passes that Havertz slipped to Odegaard during 1st half?
Havertz movements dragged players away and allowed Odegaard that split-second clear space to shoot. Pity his shooting is not precise.

And during 2nd half, Arsenal attacking game went to pieces.
