Kenyon: Robinho NOT Worth City Fee

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has come in for some stern criticism from some quarters of the Stamford Bridge faithful for our failure to capture Robinho. A long, drawn out saga was brought to a close with Man City’s spectacular swoop at the 11th hour of the transfer window but Kenyon has hit back citing Chelsea’s economic position on the matter.
“Robinho is not worth 40m euros.”
“We were never prepared to go to that amount.”
Robinho is now the 2nd big player behind Daniel Alves that we lost out on due to the clubs different philosophy on transfers which started in January 2006.
Buck and Kenyon stated from the first days of the Abramovich era that Chelsea’s net spending on transfers would gradually decrease each season although we would splash out if the right player came along – but the days of paying over the top of our board’s valuation for a player were over.
Chelsea could have matched City’s offer if they wanted to in terms of the transfer price although it’s unclear on just how much exactly Robinhos wages are – I’ve seen reports ranging from 92k a week through to 150k and even up to 250k!
There is a large section of Chelsea support who have had enough of us being ripped off on transfer fees and wages and its purely academic discussing what we might have possibly achieved for example, with the purchase of Alves last summer or what would have happened if we had signed Robinho - But to be fair to Kenyon, he was dammed if he did and dammed if he didn’t.
It was well worth the fee just to wipe the smirk off his self-satisfied face...

Well our net spend over the last 2 seasons is very very low - 10-20m.
Good luck with the revolution (and I really mean that - never had a problem with City) but prepare yourselves for some massive, constant flack from the media...and If/When you get into the CL and threaten to knock the old guard of clubs off their perch...watch them REALLY crank up the bias against you - not just the media but UEFA themselves (actually you are lucky in that we have softened them up a bit for you!).

Cheers Dixon - for the record, I never had a problem with Chelsea spending all that money either !
