Clarke Resigns to join Zola at West Ham

STEVE CLARKE
By dixon9
September 12 2008

Reports are coming in that Steve Clarke resigned as Chelsea’s assistant first-team coach last night after deciding that he will join up with Gianfranco Zola at West Ham Utd. Many of us believed that this wouldn´t happen but it’s possible that Clarkey decided on the move after apparently being less involved in Scolari´s coaching team.

According to The Times, Kenyon and Scolari have had a series of meetings with Clarke to try and persuade him to stay but unfortunately his mind is made up.

Clarke has been number 2 under various Chelsea managers and first came to the club over 20 years ago although he did leave us once before when he followed Ruud Gullit to Newcastle.

Apart from having the trust and confidence of many senior members of the squad, Clarke’s knowledge of the Premier League is invaluable to Scolari who is still obviously cutting his teeth in European club football.

Steve Clarke

The former Chelsea and Scotland defender has agreed a three-year contract at Upton Park and Chelsea are set to agree a severance package with the east end club for around £1.2 million.

Clarke is the last survivor of the pre-Abramovich era, had made 421 appearances for the club and will now form part of an ex-Chelsea duo that are sure to receive short-shrift from a rival clubs fans who will be eyeing them suspiciously from the beginning and expecting instant results.

Clarke first came to the club more than 20 years ago and many Chelsea supporters are shocked and disappointed at the news.   This is the latest in a series of recent blows that include the failure to sign Robinho, Essien´s serious injury and now this - Zola and Clarke to West Ham!  They say things come in threes – let’s hope this is the last.

For Chelsea fans, we are talking about two Chelsea icons who are admired and revered and have now defected to another side.  It’s difficult not to wish them well but the sight of both of them on the West Ham bench will almost too much to bear.

Well to be fair, you fellas have been eating all the pies for a few years. And Mr. Zola can hardly be accused of a defection ten years later (or thereabouts).

Tell you what, I feel for you, you can have our sponsor, XL, next season.

Both have been great servants to Chelsea. I wish them both all the best and it would be great to see West Ham competing with the top flite and you can guarantee they will be playing Zola football.

I think Zola will do his best for West Ham. If he can bring any of his qualities as a player to his management we will do well.Good riddance to Curbs hopefully no more boring football.

Chelsea confirm that Clarke has handed in his resignation BUT also that they HAVE NOT accepted it:

I wouldn't worry if I were you lot.

They'll both be back at Chelsea at some point - if they do well at West Ham.

Am not worried about Zola - he was a great servant to Chelsea and he is a legend and Chelsea's All time favourtie player as voted by the fans.

Clarke's defection is more of a disappointment considering he has always wanted to become a manager in his own right.

Trying to imagine things from Clarkes perspective;

With Mourinho he was very much involved with the coaching and Mourinho probably appreciated his input on PL teams. He must have felt valued and no doubt also saw it as an excellent learning process whilst enjoying the experience of the club playing football at the highest level.

Next up Grant. I would guess that he stayed out of loyalty to the club and realised that if we were to achieve anything then he would need to help Grant out with the team and his knowledge on the PL as much as possible. The club also cemented things with a contract renewal even though I suspect Clarkey isnt that much financially motivated (as long as he feels valued and is not having the pee taken out of him).

Now we have Scolari - one of the worlds most recognised coaches. Again, another excellent new learning experience and football at the highest level. So why move? It can only be that he doesnt feel as vital to the cause, that his contribution isnt as important as before - and for someone who probably isnt as money grabbing as others this is a very important point. He must be moving because Scolari doesnt demonstrate that he is needed.

If we are to believe the Times, there have been meetings between Kenyon, Scolari and Clarke and the club has tried/is trying to persuade him to stay. Indeed, the club confirms that his resignation has NOT been accepted. I can only presume that with all the changes going on since Scolari has arrived, Clarke has been neglected or at least feels that way - a casualty of change and perhaps a lack of attention from the club.

There is also another angle - that is that Clarke and Zola are very good friends - he apparantly spends every summer with Zola at his home in Sardinia.

What Mike West Ham doesn´t realise is that we have a much higher average attendance than his club for over a 100 years of football history - but like most Sky newbie fans he needs to believe al the tosh the media serve him up to make himself feel better.

And to have a pop at our fans after his lot left really early twice when his team needed the fans most last season (once against us after only 18 mins!!!!) really shows how deluded he is.

Quite pathetic really.

Never forget his debut at Arsenal (I think) the same day Kerry scored that goal at the North Bank.

Rougvie took no prisoners and the fans luvved him. As a footballer he was s***e but he played for the shirt.

Ah Rougvie yes loved him but could have killed him that night at Sheffield wed when he tripped lyons in the box for a penalty for them to draw 4.4 in the milk cup.And we won the replay 2.1,wee micky thomas with the header from the corner to win us the game. Then came Sunderland in the next round and the rest is history.

"My equaliser against Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup is the best Chelsea goal I ever scored. To come back from 3-0 down was amazing."

Kudos to Paul Cannoville that night.... scoring Chelsea's first within seconds of the 2nd half starting.

I used to go to Fulham and Chelsea when I was a kid living in Wandsworth but had no feeling for either. I had also been to Arsenal and Sp*rs. My first trip to Upton Park in 1962, however, and I became a Hammer for life instantly. It was the absence of atmosphere in the other grounds compared to the electric atmosphere at UP, and the humour that got me. Seeing the rent boys lording it these days just makes me laugh. Many of these glory hunters will be gone when Abramovitch decides he can't match Man City, and where will you glory seekers go then?

Re: Clarke Resigns and Defects to West Ham

Well we had a higher average gate than you lot even before Abramovich came.

And you seem to be a bit confused anyway - travelling around watching clubs until you found one you liked (which just so happened to West Ham when they had a good period with Peters. Moore, Hurst and co - sounds a bit GLORY HUNTER to me).

Been to Upton Park loads of times - a bit of noise when you scored but that was it - I was always a bit disappointed about the atmosphere there - no comparison to Chelsea and your fans are too fickle. Just look at how many of you were left above with 20 mins to go against us - you even started leaving 18 mins after the start.

http://i33.tinypic.com/ba355.jpg

I think that puts to bed what your fans are REALLY like - and you have the gall to call US glory hunters?!!!!

It really beggars belief.
