God knows how many times we have faced each other over the last 5-6 seasons both in domestic and European competition but it must be some kind of record. Certainly, this will be the 4th time we have faced each other in the latter stages of the Champions League during the last five seasons and the 5th time in as many seasons overall in this competition – a total of 10 matches in five seasons in the Champions League alone!

Due to the remembrance of the Hillsborough tragedy falling on the 15th April the first leg will be played at Anfield on the 8th April so that the return leg at Stamford Bridge falls on the 14th. In fact, should we successfully negotiate Liverpool in the next round then we will also play the return leg of the semi-final against either Barcelona or Bayern Munich at home.

Manchester United have arguably the easier draw with Arsenal’s fixture against Villarreal also being favourable.

Oh well! Here we go again!

Some interesting stats (purloined off a blog):

Couple of stats relating to the advantage of being at home in the 2nd leg in European knockout ties (excludes round of 16 ties as those are effectively seeded with group winners at home in 2nd leg).

Since 94/95 (when the knockout stages were brought back)
84 QF and SF ties:

Home 1st leg goes through 38 times (45%)
Away 1st leg goes through 46 times (55%)

In the last 7 seasons (where the quarter finalists have been mostly the same every season) it rises to 42 QF and SF ties:

Home 1st leg goes through 16 times (39%)
Away 1st leg goes through 26 times (61%)

A significant advantage in my book and means that the most likely finalists (statistically at least) are Arsenal and Chelsea.
