Carvalho would accept Chelsea exit

Chelsea centre-half Ricardo Carvalho has admitted that he would be open to a transfer from Stamford Bridge if the club agreed to let him go – in contrast he also said that he would be fine if he stayed.

"I am available for a club who wishes to have me," said the Portuguese international.

"But before being approached, an agreement must be found with Chelsea, although I am delighted that several clubs are interested in me.

"I have had four extraordinary years at Chelsea till this year, which has not been very good, indeed the worst of my career. I wasn't in great shape because I haven't played.

"But if there is no transfer, I will be fine at Chelsea."

The 31-year-old said something similar at the end of last season – this seems typical of his laid back, almost apathetic manner.

Nevertheless, we will have to make some cold, hard decisions this season – especially with regard to the central defensive positions.  Mancienne will need a spare berth enabling him opportunity for playing time although he has also played in the holding role.  Ivanovic and Alex both looked good last season and it seems that ONE of either of these two or Carvalho will have to go.

Carvalho made just 12 Premier League appearances last season due to injury problems and with age not in his favour it may well be a reluctant decision on the clubs part to let, on his day, one of the worlds best defenders depart from the club.

It’s a tough call indeed.
