An extremely young and unrecognisable Academy side travelled north to face Blackburn Rovers on Saturday in their first league game of the season and were disappointed to lose 1-0, with Rovers scoring their goal in the last six minutes.
With virtually the whole reserve team out on loan or having been sold, last year's scholars have been moved up to the reserve team and several of this year's first year scholars made their debuts as contracted Chelsea players.
Due to commitments with the England U17 squad, Josh McEachran was unavailable and Chelsea have 15 year old schoolboy Nathaniel Chalobah also in the squad.
The U17s face Italy, Turkey and Portugal in the FA International Tournament.
The Academy look to get their season off with a win when they entertain Nottingham Forest at Cobham next Saturday.
The reserves start their campaign at home to Aston Villa tomorrow night (Tuesday) with new reserve coach, Steve Holland, who is taking charge for his first game. Steve joined Chelsea last week after working with Crewe's youngsters.
The reserves vacancy arose when Paul Clement was promoted to the first team's coaching set-up.
Chelsea: Sam Walker, Billy Clifford, Danny Mills, Kenny Strickland, Tom Hayden (Aziz Deen-Conteh 75), Conor Clifford, James Ashton (Philipp Prosenik 70), Kaby, Milan Lalkovic, Marko Mitrovic, Bobby Devyne.
