Almost snatching a draw from the jaws of victory or worse, resilient Chelsea held of Villa’s late flurry by scoring two late goals in an impressive victory – Ivanovic , with his second of the game (how does he do it?) and a belter from the hardworking Fernando Torres right on full-time took the points back down the M6.
Stan, Villa’s man was in the ground with his wife and youngsters and took the emotional acclaim of both sets of supporters prior to kick-off then within the first ten minutes, Sturridge blasted Chelsea ahead after the ball was blocked by Given from a close-range Torres effort.
In an entertaining first-half chances were created by both teams: Chelsea hit the post and Cech saved brilliantly from Agbonlahor close to half-time, the two best.
Chelsea went further ahead soon after the restart when Ivanovic stabbed home following a Mata corner.
With 13 minutes left, the fun really began.
Chelsea were outdone by a long throw… WHAT? As Collins headed in from close-range then minutes later Eric Lichaj stabbed home Villa’s equaliser in front of a delirious Holte End…. VILLA VILLA VILLA, then with everyone expecting Villa to push on with the winner up stepped Ivanovic to put the Blues back in front, straight from the restart.
Deep into injury-time, the moment the travelling Blues and the man himself had waited a long six months for, Torres raced onto a Sturridge pass to fire home his first league goal since October.
Bobby Di, who Mr A and board should take seriously for the job full-time said after, “I thought we were strong. We dominated and controlled the game, apart from five minutes where they scored a couple of goals.
“It’s always difficult to defend against Collins, he’s a big threat in the air and from long throws, but apart from that we looked very strong, had many chances, hit the post and it was a shame we couldn’t kill the game off earlier but it was a fantastic performance again.”
“I always said it doesn’t matter who scores, Torres has been providing and now he’s scoring as well, everybody’s happy we scored four goals today, he scored and it was a terrific goal at the end.”
