Chelsea 2 Juventus 2: Oscar Wonder Goal but 2 Points Dropped

We traipsed out of Stamford Bridge feeling “bloody annoyed” as Black Adder would have said.  Some nice football and reasonable overall control was ruined by inexplicable lapses of concentration which cost us the 3 points.  The Chelsea faithful had one hero and one villain.

“How did we manage to be 2 goals up and still not come away with the points?” was the question on most supporters lips in the post-match pub analysis.  Well, we wouldn’t be Chelsea if we didn’t make this sort of cock-up I suppose – despite more contemporary power and success our DNA will always pop its head over the parapet now and then.

Oscar, Juventus

"Hero"

Oscar scored what already is being hailed as one of the best ever goals scored during the history of Stamford Bridge.  Here was the hero – a Brazilian youngster who had a magnificent home debut.  His extraordinary technique in working the goal was dubbed “lucky” by a certain Mr Souness whilst other pundits have given the goal its justifiable due.

Mikel Juventus

Villian?

Mikel – here was the villain: Unfortunately the holding midfielder has come in for heavy criticism during various points of recent seasons.  His lapse of concentration cost us the equalising goal last night whilst his distribution and frustrating habit of nearly always passing backwards has led many to believe its about time Romeu was given a run in the side.  We are certainly more dynamic when he doesn’t play – but that is a rare occurrence, and the last couple of managers have held faith in the player.

Personally, in general I find it VERY difficult to slate any Chelsea player...but...I think we have reached the point where Di Matteo would do well to give Mikel a rest.  We also musn't forget he is a player who has been played out of position for his entire Chelsea career (he was originally an attacking midiflelder, where he still plays for his country).

Not the most auspicious way to begin our defence of old Big Ears but let’s hope we learn the lessons – or ring the changes – before our next European encounter.
