Southampton Preview: Demba Ba and Peter Osgood

Demba Ba has finally signed for Chelsea after much tooing and froing during the past week and looks set to play some part in the holders 3rd round match at St Mary’s. It is a possibility Ba may start as ‘The Portly One,’ has suggested on numerous occasions that Fernando Torres needs a rest. Aaahhh Poor Boy! Victor Moses and Obi Mikel are also available for the game before they depart for the African Cup of Nations.

It has been suggested through social networking that Southampton and Chelsea fans will ‘unite’ at nine minutes past three, to acknowledge and commemorate the life of Peter Osgood, ‘The King of Stamford Bridge’ who served both clubs with flair and distinction and was the King of the Kings Road.

It will be seven years on 1st March that news broke of Ossie’s tragic death at a family funeral and I still remember where I was at the time I heard the news on the radio.

For me he was my my hero. I grew up watching the man scoring goals near and far – 1970 FA Cup Final replay at Old Trafford is still my favourite goal of all time – 1971 European Cup Winners Cup final replay in Athens against Real Madrid – to name a couple and as part of my appreciation, I will be wearing my blue shirt with pride with my ‘Ossie’ badge above the Chelsea crest

Ossie scored five out of thirteen against Jeunesse Hautcharage of Luxembourg in 1971, including one with his knee.

Chelsea won 21-0 on aggregate and over the two games, Ossie scored eight!

He is a legend and despite the many, many players that have walked through the door at Stamford Bridge, Ossie is a TRUE legend and a footballing king.

Over two spells at Chelsea, Ossie played 289 games, scoring 105 goals and winning the Football League Cup in 1965, the FA Cup in 1970 and the European Cup Winners Cup in 1971.

Ossie spent three years at Southampton between 1974-1977 making 126 appearances scoring 28 goals in the famous red and white stripe shirts whilst playing at The Dell.

He won the FA Cup again in 1976 when Southampton beat Man Utd 1-0 at Wembley, the memorable goal scored by the late Bobby Stokes.
