In their first game of the New Year the Academy lost at home to a single goal to the top of the table Southampton. An unlucky Scott Sinclair hit the post in the first half.
Despite the defeat, the only goal being scored at the start of the second half, coach Brendan Rodgers was pleased overall. He said
"They were older and physically stronger than us, and we coped well with that and should have got something from the match.
"We had a lot of good performances, but I felt left-back Ryan Bertrand was outstanding in his first game in four weeks, and Liam Bridcutt did well in midfield."
Team (4-2-1-3) Hamann; J Younghusband, Worley, Cork (c), Bertrand; Bridcutt, Furman; Watkins; F Ferreira (Simmonds), Cummings, Sinclair.
The Academy's next game is away to Ipswich on Saturday 14th January, kick off 11am.
