Tranmere’s first pre-season friendly ended in defeat at Heswall as Rovers youngsters conceded two goals in four minutes after taking the lead themselves as the West Cheshire League side triumphed 2-1.
Rovers took the lead in the 20th minute of the game when promising youngster Mike Jones who made his first team debut in the final game of last season against Doncaster Rovers at Prenton Park, headed home a Luke Holden cross after good work in the build up by Danny Holmes.
Jones had a chance to double Rovers lead but his shot was well saved by the Heswall goalkeeper and just a minute the home side thought they had equalised only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul in the build up.
In the 72nd minute, Heswall won a penalty after a foul by Danny Holmes but Rovers keeper Kevin Connolly kept the ball out and preserved Rovers lead.
With ten minutes to go however, the home side finally did draw level when Jamie Kenyon headed in from a free-kick and just four minutes later Rovers found themselves 2-1 behind after Tony Leasor scored for Heswall.
Rovers looked for a way back into the game and Luke Holden hit the crossbar in the final minute but Rovers couldn’t find a way back into the game and Heswall were triumphant.
