After a recent run of bad form in the League, Rovers may be glad of a distraction as they travel to Gigg Lane in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy First Round on Tuesday night to face League Two strugglers Bury.
Having not won for the last five matches in League One (the last victory being the 3-1 win at Northampton), Rovers will be looking for a boost morale and confidence if nothing else in this tie against a Bury side struggling for form themselves although they have won their last two matches.
The two sides have not met in the League for a number of years and recent meetings with the Shakers have been confined to Cup competitions.
The last meeting between the two sides was in the first round of the League Cup in August 2003 at Prenton Park when Rovers fans were made to wait for 89 minutes before Eugene Dadi broke the deadlock and Bury hearts with a last gasp winner.
Last time the sides met at Gigg Lane was in the first round of this very competition in 2002 when Rovers fell to a 2-0 defeat thanks to first half goals from Jon Newby and Dave Nugent.
Indeed, Rovers record at Gigg Lane is as poor as it gets with 22 previous matches bringing just two wins for Rovers. The Shakers also have former Rover throw-in specialist Dave Challinor on their books.
Hopefully that fact can be forgotten about and Rovers can get back into the habit of winning before they return to League action on Saturday.
If this game is a draw after 90 minutes, it will go straight to penalties meaning there will be no extra time.

Bury:
Shakers Boss Chris Casper may make some changes to the side ahead of this game and is likely that striker Glynn Hurst, on loan from Shrewsbury Town will be ineligible to play in the game at the request of the Shrews.
Bury’s other loan player, goalkeeper Lewis Edge from Blackpool, is expected to be allowed to play however.
Tranmere Rovers
Rovers are expected to rest a few first team players with John Achterberg expected to deputise for Gavin Ward in goal although new rules for this competition state that every team must play at least six of their first team regulars. There could also be starts for Mike Jones, Danny Harrison and few other youngsters if Ronnie Moore decides to give them a game.
On the injury front, Rovers are without strikers Gareth Taylor (broken jaw) and Calvin Zola (foot) but Chris McCready and Ian Goodison are both expected to feature despite having minor knocks.
