Scunthorpe Utd v Tranmere Rovers Match Preview

All the News and Statistics ahead Rovers midweek visit to Scunthorpe Utd on Tuesday Night in Coca-Cola League One in what could be an important game depending on how the season pans out. Even a draw would be a positive result for Rovers in this game as they look to continue their recent good form.

After the disappointment of Saturday’s FA Cup second round defeat a home to League Two side Peterborough United, Rovers travel to Scunthorpe on Tuesday night for what could later prove to be an important promotion clash.

 

With Scunthorpe currently in second place and Rovers in third and separated by just one point, the game could be vital in shaping the forthcoming set of Christmas matches.  A defeat for Rovers would leave them four points adrift of the automatic promotion places but a win or even a draw would be classed as a good result at Glanford Park.

 

Despite the defeat to Peterborough in the Cup, Rovers are one of the in-form teams in League One having won their last four straight games including the difficult away trip to Brighton.  However the Club’s injury problems continue to get worse and may have a bearing on the result on Tuesday.

 

Scunthorpe themselves were the victims of a surprise home defeat in the FA Cup on Saturday as the usually poor away travellers of Wrexham beat them 2-0.  The Iron though have won all but two of their last six matches in the League and and have only lost once in their last six at home.

 

Having previously not met since 1991, the two sides met three times last season in League and Cup with Scunthorpe winning twice and Rovers once.

 

In the first meeting, the Iron dumped Rovers out of the Carling Cup 2-1 at Glanford Park thanks to a winning goal eight minutes from time by former Rovers player Richard Hinds after Ian Sharps had equalised Ryan’s opener for the home side.

 

Around six weeks later they got the better of Rovers again in the League at Prenton Park with hotshot duo Billy Sharp and Andy Keogh getting a goal each in a 2-0 win.

 

Rovers had the last laugh of last season as they won 2-1 in the League at Glanford Park thanks to Delroy Facey and a Chris Greenacre penalty in a game that also saw revenge for Rovers as Richard Hinds was sent off late on.  Billy Sharp had again scored for Scunthorpe.

 

 

Scunthorpe United

 

The Iron will be without Lee Ridley but they have defender Marcus Williams available again after an ankle injury whilst Steve Torpey and Ian Morris are also available for selection.

Tranmere Rovers

Rovers have been hit by a number of injuries recently and the latest victim is youngster Steve Davies (knee) who took a knock in the home defeat to Peterborough.

 

Tranmere will also be without the suspended Danny Harrison and injury victims John Mullin (hamstring), Jason McAteer, Steven Jennings and Carl Tremarco.  The long list of midfield injuries may see loanee John Thompson utilised in central midfield with Robbie Stockdale returning the team at right-back after injury in palce of Thompson who has been playing there recently.

 

Gareth Taylor who didn’t train for most of last week due to an injury may play but Manager Ronnie Moore also has Calvin Zola back from injury should Taylor be unavailable.
